Mrs Webmuppet
Ok I may be being a numpty but I'm struggling to work out how much fabric I need to make a quilt........... I normally go to the shop and the lovely ladies double check my calculations but I am going to have to order it online as I can't get to the shop due to the snow..... ( I get very confused swopping between inches and centimeters/ meters) Ok so I need ( the fabric is 42 inches wide): 12 squares @ 4 and a half inches = quarter meter fabric 12 squares @5 and a half inches = half a meter fabric ( with some left over) 12 squares @ 7 inches = 75 centimeters fabric 12 squares @ 9 inches = 1 meter fabric Could someone please double check my calculation please ( I know how much I need for the borders - I have the receipt for the borders of the last quilt I made of this size!) Mrs Webmuppet
Woohoo found a calculator on an american website - then used another website to convert it to metric!
Valkyrie
I bought a thingy dial for my friend - neither of us know how to work it! I'm thinking perhaps a calculator thingy instead next time!
Mrs Webmuppet
here's the calculator I used, it only does squares and only works in inches but it is a help. http://search.quiltshops.com/calculator/calculator.htm
Valkyrie
Inches is my language! Thanks for that - all bookmarked for future reference.

Plum
Ok I may be being a numpty but I'm struggling to work out how much fabric I need to make a quilt........... I normally go to the shop and the lovely ladies double check my calculations but I am going to have to order it online as I can't get to the shop due to the snow..... ( I get very confused swopping between inches and centimeters/ meters) Ok so I need ( the fabric is 42 inches wide): 12 squares @ 4 and a half inches = quarter meter fabric you'll get 9 squares across the width so will need 9 ins or quarter 12 squares @5 and a half inches = half a meter fabric ( with some left over) you'll get 7 squares across the width so need 2 rows so 1/2 metre 12 squares @ 7 inches = 75 centimeters fabric half metre again if full 42" useable (6 squares across the width so 2 rows)or 54 cm (21" i.e. 3 rows) to be on the safe side 12 squares @ 9 inches = 1 meter fabric you'll get 4 squares across the width so will need 3 rows i.e. 27" which is 69cm or 3/4 metre to have some left over. Could someone please double check my calculation please ( I know how much I need for the borders - I have the receipt for the borders of the last quilt I made of this size!) in other words I agree with your calculations
Mrs Webmuppet
Thank you Plum. I ordered the fabric yesterday afternoon, and it arrived this morning (despite the 8 inches of snow)......I have been busy turning it into a quilt top today. If this weather continues it'll be finished in no time ( I need it done for my how to finish a quilt course next month) I ordered plenty of fabric but it's such lovely fabric, I don't think it'll be a problem find a use for the left overs
Plum
I think a few of us need to come on that course with you

Mrs Webmuppet
I would say you could stop here but the spare room is occupied by the piano and the sofa bed is now in the conservatory! (a bit chilly out there this time of year).
Valkyrie
Well that's so kind of you! Never mind - I think maybe a holiday on my own to hunt down the ancestors plus a little needlework sounds dandy to me - I'll leave everyone else at home. I wonder if my fellow quilting friend would like to go B&Bing with me to go to these lessons.
Mrs Webmuppet
Koojie, Providing they are weekday lessons, I could come and hold your hand! There's plenty of B&B's in this area.
