fluffyknickers
Hello all and happy new year, I have a quail question! Are they noisy? Perhaps I should add a poll! No noise Less noisy than chickens More noisy than chickens! Thanks everyone Michelle
Lesley
Not noisy at all They make a cute sort of purring/chirruping noise and even the males aren't noisy.
Lewis
The males sound like frogs! Ours never crowed in the morning, just at night , but I think that could be because there were a few of them (separated) When they were in the side passage over winter, you'd go downstairs at night, turn on a light and *wi wi wee* They aren't loud though - the neighbours never said anything, but some neighbours a few houses up did have a cockerel who was loud and he had to go. The girls just used to cheep and you wouldn't know if it was them or a wild bird really
fluffyknickers
Oooh thanks for this - just investigating and reading lots at the moment. My chickens are still worrying me with the noise in a terraced house! How many quail can go in an Eglu with standard run? Also seems that I read they are hardy birds then that they dont get on with cold! Whats the hardiest breed of quail? The run would be covered with clear tarpaulin. Thanks everyone Michelle
Lewis
They're pretty hardy, I hatched mine in October and kept them in over-winter, but had 3 adults that were outside then bought in when really cold. One friend of mine keeps his (there are hundreds ) in a heated shed, then another who keeps hers in hutches and they're out all winter ... they're the same as chickens really, some people give them heat lamps/bring them inside, other keep them out and leave eglu doors open. If they were in a covered and run they should be fine out over the winter Japanese quail are the hardiest and lay the biggest eggs and I'd think that you could get at least 6 in an eglu
Willow
My males have been moderately noisy around dawn in the summer. Crowing nothing like as loud as a cockerel but loud enough to wake you up if your windows are open. I'm fortunate the neighbours who are disturbed as well as us are very nice about it - and like quails eggs
fluffyknickers
Thanks for this. I wouldnt be looking at males anyway and would just be females (as much as I would LOVE to have quail chicks!). This is all food for thought and something I am looking into as would need a home for my 3 chicken girlies. I just dont want to be eglu-less or bird-less or for that matter egg-less but so worried about the noise of chickens. x
Willow
Females are very quiet. I should get rid of the male really - but I can't bring myself to. It's a bit of a problem hatching chicks as you get 60% males. I ended up buying females after hatching some. I'm going to try hatching again this spring and try and be a bit tougher For some reason my male decided to start crowing a lot today and as he's inside it's very loud. Maybe it's warm enough inside he thinks it's spring
Janty
I have two males and they're not noisy at all. The sound that they make is quite endearing.
