Best Place to get Hatching Eggs?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend any good places to get hatching eggs?

We really want to hatch this year, and I don't trust Ebay after hearing too many stories. Can anyone recommend anywhere.

At the moment I am considering a multitude of breeds, namely LF Frizzles, Cream Legbar, Gold Legbars, Welbars, Arucanas..... as you can see I haven't quite made my mind up yet

Phil has a "thing" for unusual egg colours, so would like ones that lay Blue, Green, White or very dark brown hence the list above, but we are considering the merits of dual purpose meat too :?

I know I am not helping you to help me

I couldnt find a breeder anywhere near me to get eggs from so had to go down the ebay route. The eggs came superbly packaged in a polystyrene box, so well protected and they looked beautiful and clean.

Will let you know how or if they hatch but if they dont I think it will be more down to me. Although reading more and more about it, everything seems to be against me at the moment, wrong time of year, been put through the post etc.

Wernlas do hatching eggs so that may be an option

I would recommend that you take a look at the Practical Poultry forum they have a hatching egg 'register' and may have someone local to you

If you can stand a journey up to Shropshire the P P mamber 'Chickenstreet' has lots of breeds and a set up to die for

If you fancy a trip over the bridge then I would also recommend Wiltshire Chickens who are about half an hour from the M4, the lady there is lovely

Always collect the eggs if you can, if not then ask for special delivery and pay the extra as these parcels are sorted by hand and the package wont have such a rough ride

I had a look on the Wernlas site and it doesn't mention hatching eggs.

Thanks Redwing, as I trust Wernlas.

Re the P P Forum, I have tried and failed on more than 1 occasion to register  and all the "for sale" sections you have to be registered :wall:

I do not mind driving, so a drive to Shropshire or Wiltshire is fine. :D

Thanks all :D

Good luck in finding a Gold Legbar breeder, I haven't found anyone other than Wernlas. I spoke to them last year about their Gold Legbars and was very impressed with what I heard. Basically they charge something like £24 for delivery of eggs but that's by a courier so you'll know the eggs haven't been knocked around in the post. Considering I pay at least £6 for special delivery on top of the fee for 6 Ebay eggs, £24 doesn't seem too much if you're buying at least 18 eggs. I never ever buy eggs that are sent first class or recorded delivery.

Don't rule out Ebay completely, there are some good eggs on there, it's a case of checking feedback thoroughly, ask the seller questions and ask others to recommend good sellers. I'm happy to recommend a few via PM if anybody wants, I've bought plenty over the past year :lol:

I found my eggs on the P.P. list in the end :D

Was going to recommend that you get some !eggblue! / !egggreen! Brilley eggs and join the stupidly limited club  The chicks did have some problems though but don't know wether that was down to the eggs or me or what :eh::think:

I wondered if Wernlas did them - that's where you bought your girlies from before wasn't it.

Naughty Redwing showing another place not a million miles with birds - rather fancy a wheaten maran now. No, no, NO!

Our eggs came from the same breeder as our girls - very happy with that lady and her willingness to take back the boys.
