What to get - * 6 wk photos added!

Recommended Posts

Hope you get some :D

Our Brilley eggs had odd shaped air sacs - didn't go in a circle, but sort of spread out in a splat?

We only thought 1 was fertile but still we got a couple of chicks out of them :)

The air sacks are almost kidney bowl shaped - they go halfway up the eggs on two sides, but hardly anything - right up to the candler in the other direction - very odd, probably will not photo, but I will have a go with one tonight.

anyway 10 days to go and all will be revealed!

So candling eggs straight from the run today as a comparison I am pretty sure about a number of the egg being infertile and can see claer veins on 4. The dottes have me foxed so they shall just be left in and I will see what happens - not a good shot, but I have tried to take a photo of a dotte for you:

So I think it definately has done something, it could be it is too dark an egg (I cannot see anything inside the blue CL egg as shell is too thick) - it could be that the chick is at the pointy end not down the side and that is why I cannot see veins.

Not a great photo - but any ideas. Now I am just going to leave them to get on with it - those I am confident are duds I will remove at 2 weeks.

So after looking at photos of candle eggs in one of my books I thought the SL dottes looked OK, just not the same as the others - so just candled again - I now think 1 = infertile, 4 look to be moving inside (cannot see clear veins though) and the blue lace looks fertile, but now not moving and smaller mass.

I promise to now hide the candler and not open the lid again for a few days at least - oh it was so much easier without candling and just waiting 21 days!

So I took 6 eggs out of the inccy yesterday definately infertile - there are many others I am dubious about, but only the clear one have been taken out, so we wait & see on the other 12. Given postal eggs, some e-bay, I was only thinking about 50% anyway so that is still possible, but I expect less to be honest.

I think 3 SL dottes still going, 4th fertile, put think it has stopped, as has the blue laced. It looks like the taped silkie & leghorn eggs are still going, plus a frizzle egg and the RIR and I cannot see inside the cream legbar egg, then I am convinced the other 2 left in are not fertile but OH is convinced otherwise.

Ohh Taj, its a horrible time isnt it? I was convinced i wasnt going to have any hatch, absolutely convinced. Then, i get two hatch out of 6, 3 of them were totally infertile so really 2 out of 3.

i never had a single sign either, no sound, no wobbling, just when i checked on them before going to bed on day 21 i noticed a tiny little hole in 1 egg, oh was i exited, then in the morning the second one had pipped

So, dont give up hope yet, not too long to wait, although it'll feel like forever

My first hatch last Sept/Oct 12 out of 12 were fertile and 11 hatched and all grew up to be perfect, with never any health issues. So any other hatch was never going to be as good - I was rather spoilt the first time I think! This time less will hatch - the positive is I really do not need any more hens! The first lot were meat/table birds just white or brown - this time it is much more exciting with so many different breeds to see what I actually get will be fun.

And the bonus, as the orps were not fertile, we got two POL last weekend so I already have a lovely buff & black orp running around the garden - so it is all a win-win whatever happens now.

We are now in the last phase inccy has stopped turning, temp down & humidity up - 2½ days to go. The Silkie egg is rocking around like anything already. I put the Silkie in with the other LF, but the egg was smaller than the other LF, so it may come earlier than the others - I put the banties in a day later than the others to compensate for their size.

The question is will the Silkie get through the sticky tape and the nail varnish at the air sack end - I will have to watch closely when it pips!

The bantie buff Plymouth Rock (not a chicken I wanted) has pipped, plus so has the Cream Legbar - Chicken Wiggle note this is the one that has shown no signs of life and I couldn't see through the shell candling, so there is hope for you CL.

It is only day 20 (LF), the banties went in a day later due to their size, so it is only day 19 for the pipped Plymouth Rock (one of the two sticky tape eggs) - the egg is tiny - not much bigger than a golf ball.

They are keeping me waiting :notalk::notalk: The CL (male I feel) is out and drying off in the inccy, as is the bantie Buff Plymouth Rock, now 2 SL dottes, the RIR & Silkie have all pipped - just taking their time, that leaves another two eggs I am still a bit hopefull of doing something. So far I have a male and a breeed I didn't particularly want - all the ones that are keeping me waiting are al the ones I really wanted - they are very naughty :shameonu:

I promise photos when they come out of the inccy tomorrow.

I now have: a silkie, 3 SL wyandottes (3rd not 100% I feel), RIR, Bantie Plymouth Rock, & CL (male?) Of the eggs left in no signs, 4 I was not convinced about still being viable from candling but left in just in case, then there is one frizzle egg that has not pipped, but I am sure was still moving 24hrs ago, but it is only 21 days today for that egg as it went in a day later as a bantie egg so I haven't given up hope.

So the count seems to be:

6 H/E SL dottes (off the web, not E-Bay) = 5/6 fertile, 3/6 hatched - lets hope I get a girl

6 LF mixed H/E from e-bay = 3/6 fertile, 3/6 hatched

6 Bantie H/E from e-bay = 2/6 fertile, 1/6 hatches (another possibly pending)

So overall 7 chicks from 18 eggs (+1 to come?) - I am not unhappy with that - not the 12/12 fertile & 11/12 chicks I got last time, but that was always going to be hard to beat. Given it is early in the year, posted eggs, etc and the space I actually have for new hens I am happy with what I have - as long as they are not all boys

The last ones were only born 4-5 am (obviously I wasn't up at this time watching  ) so you will have to wait for them to dry off and go in the brooder - but I promiss photos before the day is over.

Update at 9.30 am

I now have: a silkie, 3 SL wyandottes, RIR, Bantie Plymouth Rock, & CL (male?) & a frizzle. Other eggs candled - no good, all duds now opened and most infertile or stopped very early as little to see inside.

So the count seems to be:

6 H/E SL dottes (off the web, not E-Bay) = 5/6 fertile, 3/6 hatched - lets hope I get a girl :pray:one looks to have a splayed leg - will see more when it is dry & out of the inccy - it could be the sticky plaster is needed.

6 LF mixed H/E from e-bay = 3/6 fertile, 3/6 hatched

6 Bantie H/E from e-bay = 2/6 fertile, 2/6 hatches

So overall 8 chicks from 18 eggs - I am not unhappy with that - not the 12/12 fertile & 11/12 chicks I got last time, but that was always going to be hard to beat. Given it is early in the year, posted eggs, etc and the space I actually have for new hens I am happy with what I have - as long as they are not all boys

I promiss photos before the day is over.

Bad camera work I am afraid for some of the close ups, but I am sure you get the idea - trying to get them to stand still (or stay awake!) whilst taking pictures is a bit tricky!

Group shots - difficult to get all 8 in shot without running off:

The little bantie buff Plymouth Rock (1st out, 1st to drink - attitude makes up for size)

Then came the cream legbar

The the biggest chick the RIR (male?)

The qute silkie with those fluffy legs (I assume black or blue?)

Then the three (asleep!) Silver Laced Wyandottes - I was worried their markings were different, but looking online these are all 'normal'

Last, but not least, little frizzle (but frizzled what I ask?)
