Anyone watching this? If I ignore all the judges apart from the opera singer (what do an interior designer, a rock artist and a woman who sings the odd opera song but never a full opera really know about opera?) I'm totally in awe of the Nolan! Who would have thunk a Nolan had that much passionate performance in her?! She's amazing!

 

I prefered the BBC conductor contest last year (forgotten what it was called). This is a bit classic-lite, but it's entertaining, and THE NOLAN! :D

 

ps: surprised there's no thread on this yet. Tried searching for about eight keyword combos but couldn't find it. Mods - sorry if I'm duplicating!)

Love it, I can't take the opera guy seriously since Harry Hill said he looked like the guy on the Dolmio ad the puppet thing. I really like Jimmy Osmond (my first single was "long hiared Lover from Liverpool") how sad is that? And Kym marsh. i am surprsed its not been posted. And this from a non opera fan

I'm enjoying this too and have been really impressed with the ladies.

 

Embarassing admission moment - I went to see the Nolans at the Night Out in Birmingham many moons ago and they were brilliant - incredible voices, harmonies and stage presence, especially Bernie.

 

Her performance last week was outstanding.

I didnt think that I would like this but its great, whoever thought up the panel must be on something :lol: who would have had an opera competion hosted by a gardener, judged by an interior designer, a bonkers rock star, and OK 2 singers. Im very impressed with the singers, Bernie is great, and the one from Shakespears sister,

OH and I are enjoying this too. I've surprised myself by just how many of the pieces I know (not being an opera fan).

 

I think Marcella has a fabulous voice but is a bit lacking in the personality department. IMHO Bernie, Marcella and Kym will be the finalists, but I do have a soft spot for Darius, especially after the dignified way he carried off his "wardrobe malfunction" last week. :lol:

I am really enjoying the programme - and ChickyChickChicken I am so pleased to read your assessment of the judges. I agree with you totally, although I think Lawrence LB does actually have a valuable opinion. I am totally fed up with Meatloaf and can't stand KJ. She sings in one volume and one colour. The voice is so much more flexible than that.

 

I also agree that Bernie is being amazing. She is the only one who has expressed what it feels like to really sing, that overwhelming joy.

 

I am afraid I can't agree about Kym Marsh. I think she has a very weak voice and is amplified a lot. She seems to get fairly easy stuff to sing and she can't convey a meaning at all. I think she should have gone this week.

I was Wondering why lawrence LB was on there and apparently he does have some Opera training!!!

 

I know Mr Loaf is more of a fruitcake than a meat loaf but I love him and he can?/could sing back in the days.

 

Anyway all very entertaining, but i must agree that I prferred Maestro last lear (apart from Jane Asher)(sorry) :oops:

It's so nice to find people who agree!

 

I know MeatLoaf had amazing vocal skills, but he doesn't seem to be applying any of that in his judgements. In fact his comments have little to do with anyone's voice.

 

Jane Asher - :vom: She was terrible, but seemed to get away with it. Katy Dereham equally ghastly!

 

But Goldie - what an insight into how his brain hears music. I was fascinated by his musical skill which was greater than anyone's even with no classical training at all. Sue Perkins was good too.

 

It's a shame the BBC hasn't done another one.

I cannot abide Meat Loaf. He is so irritating!!!

The other judge I fail to see the point of is Emma Bunton. Why...? She has no classical training, she was in a very manufactured band, so why...?

I guess L L-B has some classical knowledge & lots of appreication for it, though does seema bit much that he's a judge.

I guess Alan Titchmarch presents it coz he presents/is involved with other classical-y stuff on TV, i.e. no training but does have an appreication for it and is a pretty good presenter )i think anyhow).

I would love to go to the Opera but would worry that I would not understand what was happening enough to enjoy the story.

 

Or would they be classed as musicals?

My love of Opera only began 10 years ago. Although it was sung in Italian (with German surtitles, so no help to me!) I enjoyed every minute. My brother had kindly explained the central plot to me, in a way simple enough for a 5 yr old to understand, and it meant I felt involved in the lives of the main characters all the way through.

 

Yes, opera may be performed in English, but it can be just as hard to follow the words because of the style. Personally, I find Italian the most beautifully appropriate language.

 

I'd definitely suggest understanding the storyline first, and good seats at one that's recommended & popular, you don't want to be put off by a bad experience.

 

Meanwhile, maybe borrowing a CD & reading the plot before listening, perhaps Carmen for example, & see what you think?

Ye..e.e.s.s.s..... dunno how I got that muddled really :oops: ! Well, at least the programe makers would agree with me saying she'd be a completely unsuitable judge :lol: ... given that she isn't one... :lol: What a wally!

 

Re: the Opera, I've been once, and liked it rather than loved it.... From memory was OK following the story becuase of the programe, but am sure I missed all the subtlties of the lyrics (can you say "lyrics" for opera?)
