Chicken Obsession - the new internet fuelled addiction

Recommended Posts

Definitely addictive. I started Feb 2008 with 3 and a small WIR , lost one , hubby built a bigger run to go with my new cube and got 3 more. Lost another of the older ones but have had 4 for 10mths now. Went to look yesterday ayt maybe getting 2 more in the spring. got 3 more!! no more now thats it honest. Could probably have 2 more in a year or so

 why are chooks so addictive ? I started off with a wooden coop and WIR for 6 chooks, a year later added another coop and adjoining WIR ( now connected ) and another 7 chooks. Now another year later and I want more, I cannot extend my WIRs ( well can not is wrong - I think should not is more like it, the back garden is in danger of disappearing under weld mesh  ) but later this year I will replace my chooks who died, and I keep looking at my lawn out the front - it looks very empty and I hate mowing it, I'm sure a little coop with bantams would enhance it

What a great idea. I'm just about to move my 2nd eglu and 3 ex-batts into the WIR. But once I have two eglus there really isn't space for any more. But a 2nd WIR with maybe a little tunnel connecting it to the original. Then I'd have much more space...

I still lust after a cube. (cube pink) Another WIR would enable me to to fit one in :)

Hmmm. Just have to persuade OH to build yet another WIR. But having done one, he's got the expertise to build more. He's a sucker for ex-batts so maybe that will be my angle :)

Chicken heaven here I come :)

Totally addictive :lol::lol::lol::lol:

I started with an eglu and 2 chooks, Now have and eglu, a cube, various wooden houses and OH has just completed my 2nd walk in run :lol::lol::lol: .

In the next month I will start hatching my own chicks, fathered by the cockerel I was never ever going to get :shameonu::shameonu::shameonu: (I now have 2 cockerels  ) and then they will be no stopping me :twisted::twisted: .

How time flies! When I started this thread back in 2010, I was relatively new to chicken keeping. Since then, 7 years and two house moves later, I'm still addicted. When I wrote my first post I had 7 hens and two eglus. I was blogging about chickens, and also posted pictures on my FB page. A friend from work saw the photos of my eglus and asked me if I wanted another. He had a lovely red rablu, but his childrens' guinea pigs had died relatively quickly and he wanted rid of it. Another eglu.......more chickens.

Then another friend had a fox attack that did away with her last chicken....she had a pink eglu cube with WIR and wanted to give up chicken keeping. Always room for more I went to fetch it.

When I got to her house, she also had a green rablu that was gathering cobwebs in a corner of her garden. Confident now in how easy it was to convert a rablu into an eglu (thanks to the omlet conversion kit) I happily accepted the rablu as well. I started stacking eglu WIR panels behind the garage. It was like I had become an eglu alchoholic.

I now have 7/8 hens at any one time. They have their main eglus and runs, holiday eglus and runs in different parts of the garden where they go so that I can give their main home a good clean, and a hospital eglu just in case.

Bliss!

Yep totally happened to me too.

3x chickens and a classic and run turned into buying a house with a bigger garden turned into a huge WIR turned into fencing off a huge space just for chickens turned into 4 chickens turned into fantasizing about taking in exbatts and having pure breeds and endless daydreaming and plotting of how I can get a cube so I can have more than 4 at a time...

And nightly sleepless nights in case any harm should befall my birdies while I sleep (we have regular fox visitors) and in case anyone complains about their propensity for squawking at 4am....:lol:

Oh and also I've now got one set of neighbours and half my family hooked and have a mini industry selling eggs to my poor colleagues at work...:lol::lol:

It's a serious affliction and there is no cure. Except to scratch the itch and Get More Birds that is...
