Nicola O
Came home from work and went to tuck everyone in and say goodnight and noticed that Dave didn't look quite right. Brought her in and she's standing looking very subdued, holding her wings very low and her eyes looked dull. I gave her a few Nutri-drops, and realising that I have not wormed them for a while tried to get her to eat some sweetcorn with some Flubenvet sprinkled on it. She wasn't too keen so I dissolved a tiny pinch in some water and gave her that. I'm not sure how she's laying at the moment (I have trouble telling whose eggs are whose) but I have noticed that her comb and wattles have reddened up in the last few days. Thinking that it could be problems with laying (if she's been off lay for a while and is starting up again) I also put a pinch of limestone flower in the water. I have had a few softies in the last few weeks but don't know who laid them. She did do a watery pooh - there was some normal pooh in it - and I had a feel below her vent and can't feel anything obviously egg shaped (i think I'm a bit too nervous to 'do an internal'. I also felt her crop which is full but does seem a bit soft compared to the others, so I'm also thinking about sour crop (though her breath doesn't smell) She did perk up after giving her the dosed water and her eyes looked brighter, so I've put her back with her friends for the night and will have another check over her in the morning. Do you think I've done enough - or even given her too much stuff - sorry to ramble on for so long but I wanted to make sure I'd covered everything I've done. Any advice appreciated. Redwing
It sounds like you are doing a good job, I would probably have done the same except that I would probably keep her in overnight oin the warm Check her crop in the morning that will help you rule things out or in
Plum
It could be a softie coming Nicola. In the morning I'd do as Redwing says and check her crop then and give her the once over looking for weight loss, check vent, listen to breathing back and nostrils and see what you find. Hope she's back to normal
chelsea
I was going to suggest a possible "softie" perhaps... Hope Dave has perked up today.
Nicola O
Well, first thing this morning she was as bright as a button - you would never have thought she looked under the weather last night. I brought her in and gave her a good check over. She seemed absolutley fine - no sneezing, no snotty nose, no wheezing/rattley chest, vent clean and normal, no little critters, her crop was small and when I tried to smell her breath she nearly had my nose off She did a big splatty poo that managed to miss the cloth on the kitchen worktop, hit the front edge, run down the cupboard door and hit the floor - she must have been so proud of that one . I left her freerangeing with her pals but by lunchtime she was looking sad and hunched again so she came into the spare room in a large box. She's eaten and drunk well so I'll sheck her crop again in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed for her. Nicola.

Plum
How has she been today ?
Nicola O
She's been a lot better today. This morning she was really grumpy about being in her box. She had eaten well yesterday and this morning and she seemed so 'normal' I put her outside at about 10am when I let the others out to FR as the sun was out. After about half an hour she stood looking miserable and hunched a couple of times but I waited another half hour and then she seemed a completely happy normal hen doing normal chickeny things - and has been all day and has gone to bed with her pals tonight. I put out loads of treats (more than I would normally give) but wanted to make sure she ate enough and I did see her tucking into pellets later on. The only thing I've noticed is that she is doing watery poo (there are normal lumps of poo in it) but the 'water' is white rather than clear. Does anyone know if that is an indication of anything ?? So hopefully back to normal now and the panic is over. In nearly four years of having chooks I've got a few over minor illnesses but it still makes me worry everytime. Nicola. Plum
Don't worry about the poo that is normal when they haven't eaten much. Glad she's improving.
Nicola O
Thanks Plum I am such a worrier at times like this. Dave has made me smile today though by trying to attack poor Freda (Jack Russel) every time she went into the garden for a wee . Nicola.
