Busybird
I have been doing more exercise than usual recently and noticed that a lot of my joints had started 'cracking'. To try to ease this I started taking cod liver oil with a glass of orange juice each day. At around the same time I started having digestive problems - nothing serious but uncomfortable enough to wake me up in the night. I skipped my evening meal a couple of times last week as I needed the sleep more than the food. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? It may just be a concidence but I'm not sure now whether I am doing my body more harm than good taking the cod liver oil. I don't generally take supplements as I try to maintain a reasonably healthy diet but my mum used to give us cod liver oil as a child and I tend to have more faith in 'old wives' remedies than in the latest craze
Redwing
What form are you taking it in? if liquid could you be taking too much?
kerryegg
Don't know about cod liver oil but GP advised, unofficially glaucosamine. Been taking for a few months and joints seem a bit better. I think you have to take masses of cod liver oil to heal rather than just help prevent joint problems. Hope you sort something out.
Busybird
I am taking it in liquid form - 2 teaspoonfuls a day as recommended on the bottle. My OH takes glaucosamine in 2 forms plus cod liver oil each day and I have been teasing him about quack remedies since he started He has had major back problems in the past caused by hockey (which he still plays) so does a lot of daily stretching exercises as well as running and cycling for fitness. My exercise routine is nothing like as strenuous. Could too much cod liver oil cause the bloating and discomfort that I have been experiencing? I haven't changed anything else in my diet recently but have upped my exercise.
Redwing
I'm not sure if it could cause the problems... Perhaps taking it in capsule form may be an idea or maybe one twaspoon twice a day instead of two at once if thats what you are doing (not sure from your post)
Busybird
Didn't think taking less twice a day would make any difference but I can try that I suppose I was just a bit perplexed about whether or not it was causing the problem It was so common for parents to give it to children when I was growing up I thought it was a true health food
Redwing
I take tablets twice a day for something and thats fine bt if I take two at once they make my tummy cramp and bad, thats why I thought it was worth mentioning

The Dogmother
My mother takes this in capsules fro her joints as she has arthrisit - she says that it helps. I take glucosamine and omega oils in capsules for my sports-knackered joints.
Christian
It might sounds strange, but could it be the orange juice making you feel dodgy? I can only drink it very watered down. Maybe something to do with the acid?
Busybird
I don't think that it is the orange juice as I have been drinking it regularly for a long time. The only new thing I have been taking is the cod liver oil. From some of your replies it sounds as if it could be causing the indigestion. I shall try lowering the dose. I haven't yet been taking it for long enough to say if it is helping my joints.
Lesley
I take my Omega 3 fish oil capsules at bedtime - no problems with it repeating then as it does if I take them in the morning.
Saronne
I had a bit of tummy upset when taking 'extra high strength' cod liver oil in liquid form. I also found that when I took it regularly for about a month, I started to bruise more easily (unusual for me). Apparently that is not uncommon as it can thin the blood - which is why you don't take it if you're already on warfarin (I'm not. Just taking it for general health purposes). I've since changed to capsule form -and a slightly lower dose - and the bruising and tummy ache has stopped. Saronne x
docsquid
Glucosamine is now not considered to be an "alternative" remedy. It is as effective as conventional medication, and many doctors will now recommend it as first-line treatment for arthritis. It is expensive, though, and not available on prescription. There is good evidence that it works, and it is more likely to be beneficial to joints than cod liver oil. However...it does produce tummy upsets in a proportion of people who take it. I can't tolerate it, but many can, and get good benefit.
Rhapsody
Clinical trials of Cod Liver Oil have found it has no benefit for joints at all, glucosamine and chondritin are a better option so you have a perfect excuse to stop!
