Things I have learned since becoming a chicken owner

Recommended Posts

I have learned that it is not a god idea to put an egg in the same pocket as your mobile phone and then squash it!

A very expensive mistake, it made the insurance lady laugh when I tried (unsuccessfully) to claim for a new phone!

Do you mean they have small print to cover that eventuality then  ............so you are another one in the "pocket collectors" gang then.......how many times have I discovered an egg in a pocket in an inopportune place  .....sometimes intact :D ...............sometimes not :vom::vom:

This morning I have learnt that if there is something to knock over and spill the chicken will always get the most expensive lotion/potion and not the cheapo washing up liquid.

£10 worth of nutri drops on the shed floor this morning

Aaaah the Law Of Sod is live & kicking in your shed then Em :anxious:

And I second...third...fourth the Skateboarding Silkie pics please :lol:

Not having actually got chickens yet, I will be getting them in July Im learning from this thread and the many other threads.

Since researching about chickens I have learnt that:

* I dont think twice about spending £400 on a cube!

* I take great delight in giving the boys at work a biology lesson when they ask how can I expect to get eggs without a cockerel!

* I have learnt that we shouldnt have told my 3 year old son we will be getting chickens yet as he asks everyday if they are coming today!

* I will happily spend days in the garden in the rain and cold relocating 2 greenhouses to make way for a WIR, and then build it!

* I learnt that I shouldnt have told so many people to keep old egg boxes for me!, our front door step often looks like the doorway of a charity shop in the morning!

I have enough boxes to sound proof the albert hall!

* I have learnt that I already know 2 people who keep chickens but have only just found out.

* Having tasted "home grown" eggs from a friend, there is no doubt that keeping chickens is for me (and the wife!)

I have only had my girls 8 weeks but in that time I have learned that when top girl Maude does a poop it takes just 2 seconds for second in command Sybil to step in it!

I also learned that no matter the weather I can always muster up the energy to go out and make sure the girls have all they need - and boy do they need lots (according to them!!!)

I also found that keeping chickens is great

I've learnt in the last 2 years of chicken keeping that, no matter how hateful one older hen is to the other youngsters, you just can't bring yourself to let her go and spend over £100 on a separate (but pushed up against the other) home for her. :wall:

I've also learnt that it is just as hard to take a hen for her last trip to the vets as it has been for any other pet we've had

And no matter how many times DH says they're my chickens and nothing to do with him, he still rushes out there every night as soon as he gets home to feed them some raisins - and they're waiting for him!

This thread has made me laugh and cry in equal measure - just brilliant!

This thread is wonderful.

Things I have learned in my 3 months of being a chicken mum

Poo is not gross, it's just poo and it will wash off.

My chickens are not going to die every time they sneeze. They are tougher than I thought.

Never put an egg in your pajama pocket and forget about it.

Chickens like to peck freshly painted toenails and the jibbits on my Crocs.

That I am too old and stiff to get right inside a cube run.

There is nothing better than a cuddle from a previously shy chicken.

That a grumpy little Chihuahua can fall in love with a chicken. Cisco is in love with Marion Davies the SL Wyandotte. Inter-species love..it's all the rage these days..

That chickens can make a horrible day better, even one spent on the freeways of Los Angeles.

That Omleteers are the best and funniest people on the web.

Thanks

Colette.
