eliza_faery
The lady I bought my chickens from told me she has never had any problems with red mite because she sprayed jeyes fluid around in the coop when she cleans it out and around the perimeter of the run. I'll be cleaning out my new chooks this weekend but I'm a little wary of using jeyes fluid but poultry shield is pretty expensive. Has anyone had any experience of using jeyes fluid? Redwing
I have a feeling that using the sort of disinfectant that turns water cloudy (dettol, Jeyes etc..) is not a good idea around chickens for some reason Poultry Sheild does last a while though even with my lot I have only just finished the 5l container I bought in Nov
Chucky1
I'll keep an eye on views on this thread to see what others say, but I have used a very weak solution in the past when we've had nothing else. No apparent ill effects.
Egluntyne
It isn't recommended for the reasons that Redwing mentions. If you do use it, make sure that the Eglu is completely dry before the hens go back in it and that there are no puddles lurking from which the hens might drink. Don't use it if you have cats as it is toxic where they are concerned. Most disinfectants which turn the water cloudy contain a phenol, (Carbolic acid) which is pretty heavy duty to be using around pets.
jackthelad
I breed Persian cats and its a BIG NO NO for cats I know someone who cleaned their cat pens with the stuff and poisoned her cats and lost them all so can't think it would be good for chickens, I wouldn't chance it. miller30
I use poultry shield but if i run out i use the spray bottle of clear dettol spray from the supermarket it looks like water my dad uses jeyes and has been for years with no ill effects but we aways make sure the house is dry before letting the birds go to bed . Slim
I have used it with no problems in the coop great for smells just let the coop dry out, As for red mite you just need (Diatom) diatomaceous earth cover the chooks and coop with it at night within a week all gone, I use a old washing up liquid bottle for a puffer. The Dogmother
Generally, 'human' disinfectants aren't advisable for the reasons given above. I clean my cube and eglu, then spray them with that NetTex Total Mite Kill stuff - it seems to work very well and smells nice too.
