Blue-DiamondChick07
I would really like to get 2 Buff pekin Bantams next, how easy are they to come by? Also, is there anything I should know regarding bantams?
Redwing
The main consideration is whether to mix them with your big chooks but I guess you'll have already thought about that Buffs are less common than other colours of Pekin, you do see light buffs marketed as 'lemon' too. They are nice little birds, feisty and funny
Blue-DiamondChick07
Could I have 2/3 Bantams with 1 Sussex? Just need to find some now really
Egluntyne
They are great fun, full of character and very entertaining. The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that their feathered feet can get balls of poo and mud under them, that need fettling every so often, in addition to the usual chicken care. No big deal really, and worth the effort. Have a look in the adverts in poultry magazines for breeders near you. I'm not sure that I would mix them with larger fowl. My 3 are separate. Some have done it successfully, others have not found that it works. It depends on your set up and the temperament of your hens I guess. Valkyrie
All my 8 are relatively happy together, although there are odd times when the Sussex has picked on the smaller birds (just lately it's been the opposite way round and the pekin has been chasing her out of the nest box ). I would think the Sussex on it's own with 2 diddies isn't a good option. But . . . there are bantam Sussex's around - seen some this morning and they aren't much bigger, whereas the proper sized bird is huge in comparison. How about 2 bantam Sussex varieties and the 2 pekins?

Blue-DiamondChick07
Oooh I love Light Sussex bantams! Love your av and username! Fave film of mine that is I already have a standard size Sussex (Whitey) shes lonely and needs some friends I'm trying so hard to find her a friend (or 4 LOL) and I love the Bantams... Dunno what to do really. She is so placid and gentle, but getting lonely, I had flock issues
Falkor
Yup! Fave film of mine too! Great memories from when I am younger of me and my little brothers installed on the sofa and NES in the video I have Pekins and they are "plucky" little madams Only yesterday Brie, my cuckoo pekin was seen hanging from the wattles of one of my Large Orps Brie was all "I could have ya!" and the Orp just stood there with a "Yeah, ok....whatever....carry on" look in her eye Are you planning on housing potential newbies and Whitey seperately from your other girls? Valkyrie
How about big Pekins instead - Cochins?
Falkor
How about big Pekins instead - Cochins? I was thinking along the same lines Or maybe another laid bag LF? Orp, Dotte, Brahma, Fav? **disclaimer in my experience these breeds are laid back - this may not be the case for ALL
Valkyrie
Brahma would be nice. Oops getting carried away here - that's my list - poor Bluey - we'll write the list of birds and you can tick the boxes!
sparkysmum
my pekins get on really well with my other ladies but they don't house share they're only together when free ranging or in their hen garden. Whilst I would like them to house share eventually I won't bank on it. They are brilliant little characters & I can see why some people only have pekins
Falkor
Same here Sparkysmum! My bantams and LF have seperate houses and run but FR together quite happily. In fact when they are free ranging they tend to swap runs. Banties hang out in the big girls WIR and big girls in the cube run And yep Kooj - Brahma has gone on my list too! Especially after seeing the holidayers at Redwings on Saturday
Valkyrie
I keep eyeing up Tegan - actually I did when we first saw her - that's a lovely little birdy.
Janty
I love brahmas too ( in case anybody hadn't noticed ). They have that look about them....the I'm going to eat you, bird of prey look. It's funky on such an easy going bird.

Woodcat
hey I've got three pekins in with all my others housing and all and to be honest they are fine. I had massive trouble integrating my Rhode Island because she was utterly terrified by my partridge pekin monster who would jump on her back and pick on her continuously. My lot are more than capable of holding their own and to be honest and literally climb on the other hens when i go out to give them treats. I wouldn't be without them now i think they are utterly gorgeous.
Blue-DiamondChick07
Anyone know the best place to find some in the Essex area?
Griffin
My little black Pekin Custard is so funny. She's a lovely quiet chook but get on the wrong side of her and there's hell to pay! She's fiercely protective of her friends, Sausage & Hob"Ooops, word censored!" and if any newbies pick on them she doubles in size and duffs them up Pekins don't realise how small they are

Verity F
My three Pekins are complete lunatics and always up to something The cheeky madams even have the neighbour's cat terrified. I think this time of year though, they might be *slightly* less easy to come by because of their reputation for not laying during winter. Doesn't mean there aren't any at the moment, just might take a bit of hunting. I had to be VERY patient and wait til early July for my girls. Of course now I want some more... or some little sablepoots... or even some Orpie bantams...
