likeastar--x
oh goodness, i have to take the chicken to the vet because its so bad, but i want to be prepared. we have a beautiful white bantam called minnie, shes about a year old and has had no previous problems. today i went out to see them and she was hiding indoors and had her mouth open like she had trouble breathing. she has a large mass under her eye, which on closer inspection seems to be blocking the inside of her mouth aswell. her eyes are watering. she might have had this problem for a while but all ive been doing recently in this "Ooops, word censored!"py weather is cleaning the outdoors, changing food/water and giving them treats, but not holding them like i usually do. i feel so terrible is there anything that can be done...or does it sound like shell have to be put down? :,(:,( ive been such a bad owner, in the winter months ive been too lazy. its my fault if theres something really wrong with her that could have been prevented. please reply
Plum
Oh get her to the vet it's probably a blocked sinus. Maybe Mycoplasma which can be helped with antibiotics. Keep my fingers crossed for her. Don't be too hard on yourself it could have just come up and none of us are so vigilant in this horrid weather.
Egluntyne
Oh heck. It could just be a sinus infection, or as Plum suggests, mycoplasma. Fingers crossed that the vet can sort her out.

likeastar--x
i took her and we had a good look inside her mouth, shes having trouble breathing because its some kind of infection at the top of her throat which spread and caused the lump...but i cant remember what the doctor told me it was...sorry! its pretty bad and theres a chance she wont survive, but the vet didnt immidiately put her down when i thought he would, i thought it was a tumour. shes on tablets, im a bit confused because in my worried daze i didnt ask many questions or take anything in, im so useless and were going away friday so ive been running around trying to get someone to look after her and give her the tablets who have experience with chooks...which in an urban town is not an easy task!!! and its caused by other birds and can be spread by the water apparently, so i raced home from the vets to clean the other 4 chickens water and check they dont show symptoms, which THANKFULLY they dont. after an extremely stressful few hours, the chickens are cleaned thoroughly and disinfected, and minnie is in isolation in a cage in the shed, with some wheetabix and water, so shes nice and cosy. if she dies, at least i can say i tried my hardest to help her, and shes over a year old so shes lived longer and happier than most chickens. please cross your fingers that she and my other chickens will be okay! and thanks for your general support xxxx

Plum
Glad you got help and she stands a chance. I really don't know why animals choose to be poorly just before you go away! Hope you find some willing person.
Chicken Shirl
Thinking of you and your hens and hope everything turns out well for your poorly bird. There may be an omleteer that lives in your area that could help. I hope so. Good luck.
