jellykelly
Mine has just agreed to let me have two new chooks. All I had to do was agree in principle to him having a new quad bike. Now this is not going to happen for him. I control things in this house!!! However, as he's now sweet and agreeable I'm going to strike whilst the iron is hot....... so which two out of my three should I go for.... Orpington (several local sellers have these) Brahma (Thanks Tom) or two slighter harder to locate silver spangled Hamburgs? Ideas appreciated!! jellykelly
I know - he's a naughty little begger posting these gorgeous pics to get us all yearning for new chickens.
chick wiggle
Its a case of wanting what you haven got I suppose. I have two Orp chicks, so Brahmas will be next but then i also want a lavender Araucana Ohhh will this lust for chucks never end
Space Chick
Looking at what you have already I would go for a Cream Legbar for blue eggs, and maybe a Leghorn for white eggs
half dozen
Oh its got to be a brahma they are sooooo gorgeous, gentle, docile, placid giants...everyone should have a brahma
jellykelly
I'm not really too fussed about the colour of eggs - most of mine are sold before they are laid now! How much is the 'going rate' for an orpington? Imust say that I've just been a little shocked by a price that I received from a breeder. tom123
Me?? Brahma and an Orp definitely. Going rate for both of these is roughly £20-£30 for a POL. Does depend on the colour though.
jellykelly
See, now thats what I thought. This local guy wanted £55 per hen. Now that to me is silly money. I emailed him back and pretty much told him the same - I just hope he was 'trying it on' so to speak and tries his luck with newbie keepers. I'm hoping he'll come back to me with a nicer price! Andyes Tom - you are a bad bad influence around here. You should be ashamed of yourself!
Daphne
If that was a seller with Stud in its name then they are charging top dollar and then some. I would expect to pay around £40-£50 for a quality breeding orp from show breeders I trust but you can get perfectly decent birds for say £30 and very good ones can be a lot more expensive! That particular seller is/was asking over £100 for various pairs and trios of other breeds which should cost one third that price. Their hybrids are also expensive. Patricia W
Orps are £50 each at the local Frost's garden centre but about £35 elsewhere. Tricia

jellykelly
Well all is arranged and the two I am getting aren't on the list in the original post (although they are on the 'wanted' list somewhere) I am collecting two cochins tomorrow - one black one white. I have however had to be very nice to hubby in order to get him to agree to a third purchase - so will be looking at an orp whilst I'm there too. Yey me!!! Chook n Boo Mum
Best bit is my DH has met Tom & knows he's probably a bad influence as far as chooks are concerned Just about every time he saw Tom at Salisbury he was bidding on another lot ..though in his defence they weren't all for him Sha x
