Griffin
wait ages for one then three turn up at once Tigers Pekins & Frizzles are due next weekend, Nelly has three Wyandotte eggs and now I have a broody Francesca Brahma too I was running out of room for broodies but got the bargain of the century on Ebay. I found a rabbit hutch a few miles from my parents house. It's a very solid, handbuilt, well made, 4 ft long hutch and I got it for just £15. When I got there this afternoon to collect it he gave me the run to it for free, a bag of shavings and a roll of felt for the roof because they don't need it anymore It'll be perfect for Francesca I've had a job getting it all home though. It was bigger than I'd anticipated In order to get it and all the kids back home I've had to leave two of the seats to my car at my parents house So I've got to drive all the way back to MK to collect them on Monday The things I do for my chickens! Francesca is going to become the mother of some buff Orps and wheaten Marans Edited April 26, 2010 by Guest
Lewis
You got it home then! Good luck with the chicks
Falkor
oooh super Ebay bargain!!! And broodies are exactly like buses. Maria Silkie is sat on eggs and I had three that wouldn`t fit in the inccy. Just as I was considering doing something scandalous like making an omlet with them Rasin Orpidotte started to sit. If she is still sat tonight then she will be getting the eggs
Griffin
Phew! We've finally got Nelly to settle in the rabbit hutch. She was determined that she was going to hatch eggs in her own coop that she shares with some of the others. Now that she's settled tonight I can finally move her Wyandotte eggs from the incy and put them under her Broodies are supposed to make things easier, she's been anything but! I just hope she's a good mum after all this kerfuffle. Tigers chicks are due this weekend Francesca is having to wait an extra day before she gets her eggs because 5/6 FW Marans eggs arrived smashed to smithereens 1 survived the carnage and if it hatches with be named Lucky New eggs should arrive this morning, fingers crossed they've not been kicked about. Janty
I know what you mean. Both Peregrine & Falcon (the two brahmas we picked up from you) are broody as well as Gallina the silver partridge pekin.

Griffin
All the buff Orps were clear I'm going to start candling eggs as they arrive from now on. If I'd done that then I would've known all the air sacs were shot to pieces and that the shell quality was poor If I were selling eggs then I would make sure that the shell quality was excellent, without it the chicks don't stand a chance The Marans on the whole are too dark to see into, I can see that one is fertile but I gave up on seeing into the rest and have left them under Francesca. We'll have a surprise in two weeks Francesca isn't as devoted to duty as the Silkies. Tiger barely moved, only a comfort break every few days and even then doing everything at high speed. Since being settled in the rabbit hutch Nelly barely moves either. Francesca takes a more relaxed approach to impending motherhood She doesn't get off her nest daily but when she does she really makes up for lost time She's been sunbathing and dustbathing for over an hour today Twice before when I've thought she's spent too long off I've shut her in but today I decided to watch her and see what she did. She seemed quite happy to potter about doing her own thing for a while before eventually getting back on her eggs. Not long for Nelly now, hers are due next Tuesday
Griffin
Nelly has a chick! I heard noises while I was collecting eggs, investigated and there's a great big fat Wyandotte chick One of the other eggs has pipped They're early so a nice surprise
Falkor
Great news Griffin! Maria has a pipped egg under her Having to sit on my hands and busy myself indoors so that I don`t spend the all evening watching a broody chicken sitting

Griffin
Nelly now has two chicks Nothing is happening with the third egg, I can't hear anything from it either so it wouldn't surprise me if she abandons it but for now she's sat tight. Griffin
They're LF silver laced Wyandottes that a friend gave to me. He's going to take back any cockerels, probably both knowing my luck, to rear alongside all the others he has hatched and later on in the year he'll be selecting the best two to keep back to breed with so my boys might be lucky.
