CharLeila
Hi, I bought my normal 20kg bag of Farmgate Layers Pellets on Saturday for my girls from my usual retailer. Been to top up their Grub today and found a couple of lumps in the bag that are mouldy. The date on the bag says JUL 2010 so should be OK but I'm just wondering if it will be alright for my girls to eat or should I take it back? Or at least tell the retailer there may be a dodgy batch? Thanks in advance for your help.
Falkor
Just as we wouldn`t eat mouldy food I wouldn`t allow the chooks to eat it either. I would def return it to the retailer for a refund. There have been a number of threads on this brand of feed and people have experienced similar issues.
stoice
I'd return it and contact the retailer. It could've got wet at some point, either just your bag or the whole batch. The supplier i spoke to over the weekend said he was getting calls from chook owners encountering crop problems so he had their food tested, turns out the food the customer had bought was past it's date and mouldy - he suspected the place they got their feed from just slapped on a later date, although I can't guarantee that's correct as he also trying to sell me his brand of food. Possible though.
CharLeila
Great, thanks for the replies. I'v contacted the retailer and they are going to replace my bag. Think I'll just give it a good check before I give it to my girls. If that one is mouldy too then I'll have to look at another brand. Give it a second chance first though! The Dogmother
You're right to return it, but you may find that the manufacturer isn't to blame, but that the food may have been kept in damp surroundings. Mouldy feed can be fatal, so best avoided and if you're not happy with the conditions it is kept in, then buy elsewhere.
