Nerve Conduction Study and Electromyography

Recommended Posts

Anyone had one of these? My ED has a problem with her heel (suspected RSD and plantar fasciitis) and an MRI she had showed some swelling where a couple of the nerves going into her heel. So she is going for a nerve test to see if the nerve in her foot is trapped and hopefully, after over a year, we shall be finally getting somewhere and get her walking properly again. Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone has had one of these tests done (its done for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome plus others) and what its like ie how best to prepare her for it?

Cheers me dears :D

Sorry can't help, but my YD has problems with her heel and so did I and my son at the same age. DS's seemed to pass off and we put it down to growing pains, but YD has an appointment next week with a Podiatrist. she also has terrible corns and is pigeon toed, so we are hoping that she will get some treatment to help her walk better.

I hope that your daughter's condition is sorted soon, our feet are so important to us.

yes I had this done after a car accident

Its very straightforward, they attach wires to you and you feel your skin tingling thats pretty much it, the tingling is quite intensive and verges on the uncomfortable but its not bad. Its all very straightforward, simply remove shoes and socks and lie on a bed so they can get to your feet. its pretty time consuming though, I was in there for about 90 minutes but they did do one of my arms too

I got my results after a couple of days

The results were very accurate, they said that my legs would recover all the feeling and my arm would be permenently damaged and five years later thats exactly what has happened

One of my staff has plantar fasciitis, he now wears trainers to work and this has helped tremendously

Is it like the tingling you get with a Tens machine? (I don't know if you have every used one). If it is, then it should be okay as ED used one for a while last year to help with pain relief. I'm a little bit worried that it might set off the RSD (if indeed that is what she has) and she'll be in even more pain :(

I worked for a few months in admin in a department doing this. We always sent out leaflets, some designed for kids. I'm sure you could phone up one of the medical secretaries and ask if they have not sent any information. The vast majority of tests in this sort of area were just tingly, there was one with a needle (needle EMG) but that was done rarely and as a non medic not sure what cases it was used in so may not be relevant. You will probably see a technician and a consultant. Our results went back to the referring doctor not the patient so you may need another appointment to go over the results.
