One Man Banned
Sorry this is a rant Listening briefly to the news this evening and I am ready to pull my hair out. Why oh why do these politicians have to keep chanting Green Taxes in a bid to tackle climate change? Surely there should be NO tax on things that are green and rack the rates up on things that aren't so green The planes should be on a level playing field with other forms of transport, if they can tax car owners up to the hilt in the name of carbon footprint reduction then surely slapping a tax on the jumbo's should be a doddle. I will add that I have had a few glasses of wine! Please feel free to add your own thoughts as you will A xx
Cinnamon
In total agreement with you Andrew. This is the one that annoys us the most ......................... We run our works van on vegetable oil - we have a system where you glug it straight into the petrol tank as if it were petrol & the engine can run on it.It is a highly efficient & green way to run any diesel vehicle, and as veggie oil is a food there is no VAT on it. BUT the UK government now charges us 48.35p per litre that we purchase & use, meaning that financialy we have no incentive to do this any more. Other EU countries either charge a minimal amout, or in a lot of cases do not charge a tax at all because it is such a green thing to do & they are trying to encourage all road uses to run their vehicles this way. Makes me really mad - here we are trying to do our bit, & getting taxed for the privilage
Lesley
I'm almost speechless about you having to pay 48.35 per litre for used oil Sarah - you might as well buy new oil and pour it in! I agree Andrew - it should be quite simple to tax on equal terms, but it's obviously not in the Goverment's interest to do so.

Actually, that is the tax for NEW oil - although it is the same (I think) for recycled oil However,if you used used oil & the money isn't leaving your business account, who would be any wiser? We used to collcet it from local chippies & chineses, then filter it.They were pleased as they had to pay to have it collceted & disposed of,so it saved them money too. But filtering is a pain,& you can never quite get rid of that chow mein smell from your engine
bronze
what are the government going to do when someone invents a car to run on water. Maybe thats why it hasnt happened yet.
Cinnamon
We reckon the Government are together with the oil companies to make sure some new technology never makes it to the mass market. You can run an engine on almost any liqued, with the right adjustments
bronze
Oh yes I suspect the government get more money from backhanders from these companies than they currenlty make on fuel tax. Thats why theyre so scared of alternatives.
ubereglu
Government really do live in a bubble world and are so out of touch with the real world us common people live in. Instead of taxation how about rewarding people instead and making the greener options cheaper and more viable for people to use instead? Guest
Did anyone see the programme last Thursday called 'The Great Global Warming Swindle'? It showed that CO2 levels rise AFTER the general temperature has risen, therefore not causing it. Quite obviously, the temperature of our world is controlled by the sun! Apparently humans are responsible for a tiny percentage of all carbon dioxide produced globally. The ocean is by far the greatest producer of CO2, followed by animals and volcanoes. We still have limited resources and should aim for greener energy use. My big concern is Landfill which leaches toxins into the ground and therefore the environment. So we should still aim to reduce/recycle our rubbish. But taxing CO2 emissions is just a money-making scheme and very little to do with the environment. Guest
Did anyone see the programme last Thursday called 'The Great Global Warming Swindle'? Mmmm... I believe the scientist that they used to back up most of their claims is suing them for grossly distorting his views... Phil

Guest
I don't think Carl Wunsch was a major contributor. I wish i had noted the names of the two eminent scientists who both appeared on Richard and Judy, talking about it. But I don't ever trust the media, so everything I see, read and hear I try to take as if it were an exaggeration. There must be an underlying truth there though. There must be an underlying truth there though. maybe.. but in recent interviews about this programme on Radio 4 - and about Carl Wunsch in particular, C4 have started describing the programme as "polemic" - which is short hand for putting the alternative view and not worrying too much about the facts to back it up... Guest
there appeared to be many unarguable facts to support their theories. Even so, the emissions from a car don't even come close to the emissions from planes, but nothing seems to be suggested about cutting back on airplanes. Animal poo is a huge contributor but there are no moves suggesting we cut back on meat consumption to save emissions in the fields. There are so many bigger issues, I get annoyed at the niggling little things they want to tax! Did you know that digital radio uses up 12 times the amount of energy required by analogue radio? So we will all pay more on our electricity bills, while the producers save a lot of money in production costs. Digital radio costs far less electricity at that end. So that is like another tax too really.

Guest
Someone with a wind-up radio gets an hour of analogue after winding for 60 seconds. He/she gets about 3 minutes digital after the same winding.
