iandjsmum
My poor peking bantam looks like she has a potruding bottom. I've cleaned her up as she's getting very messy and I've put some honey on it (from another poultry site recommendation). I've noticed she's a bit hunched up and doesn't scratch around happily like she used to. She's been like this for about 2 weeks. Should I take her to the vets and consider having her put to sleep or can chickens still lead happy lives like this? i'm just not sure. She's everyone's favourite shich makes the decision harder. Any advice would be great, thanks.
staceychristie
Oh dear!! First of all, just because you go to the vet, doesn't mean that your girls condemmed to be PTS. But with chickens, it is most urgent that you act quickly. They hide how poorly they really are, so the fact that yours has been poorly for 2 weeks suggest that you should seek vet assistance sooner rather than later. Sounds like yours may have a prolapse. It's a hard thing to sort out yourself, and the vet is the best person to advise you. I urge you to act quickly to avoid losing her. Best of luck Stacey
theherd123
I echo all of the above. It does sound like your chook needs to see a vet ASAP

Egluntyne
She has a prolapse from the sound of it. There is an article in the Chicken Health section of the FAQ about dealing with prolapses, but if I were you I'd take her to the vet. asap. For now, keep her in a darkened crate or box, with only water to drink. I'd keep the prolapse as clean as possible, and if she shows signs of pecking at it, try to cover it with a clean dressing so that she can't damage herself further. iandjsmum
Took my poorly hen to the vets today as she just stood still in the garden all morning, huge contrast to all the others happily scratching around. Lovely kind vet took a lot of time examining her but said it didn't look good as not only prolapse but also a serious tear, poor little thing. So we agreed best thing was for Alex to be put to sleep. I burst into tears. Had been dreading taking her but felt relieved to have finally done the right thing when I got home. Thanks for everyone's help. Sorry it's sad news. staceychristie
((((HUGS)))) PTS is so sad, but we sometimes have to make these decisions . Having just lost one of ours, I know what you mean about tears. Vets always try to save them, sounds like he did a good examination. I kept telling myself that for us to have brought ours back home, I would have been selfish, and not in her best interests.
