thenewchick
Help!! Does anyone have any good sugestions about how to stop my dog (toy poodle) chasing the hens?? When Murray goes up to them to have a sniff he is ok but as soon as they move or flap their wings they all star running around feathers everywhere!! Maybe its early days yet, but my other dog Polo doesnt even look their way!! Thank you
Christian
Are the hens in a run? Best to keep your poodle on a lead and introduce them slowly. Giving the dog a treat every time he ignores the hens?
cluckingmad
I'd keep the little poodle away form the girls for now, till he gets used to them... they'll still be finding their feet as it were, our cats were a bit like that when our girls first arrived, now the cats know who's boss and it isn't them! thenewchick
Oh thanks for the tips. I did put Murray on the lead to take them out to collect the eggs this morning it was a bit better. The hens are just out in the garden all the time only go in the at night time or to lay an or to eat and drink in the run!!
Margalot
We bought a pet corrector (compressed air in a can) for our terrier. She hasnt bothered the hens since as she thought it was them that madee the noise - (its a loud hiss, like agiant snake ) But you may have to be careful as to your dogs own temperament, i.e. nervous or afriad of fireworks, as the can really makes them jump and could be detrimental if your dogs is a nervous type. I think we paid about £8 for it at our local pet shop. My OH couldnt believe I paid that for air in a can! Some people also use water pistols, just a small shock tactic sometimes is enough to put them off. Good luck
thenewchick
Yes, I wish the hens would just give him a quick peck then they wouldn't see him for dust
lucie
I think we were pretty lucky, we have a Boxer dog who's pretty confident, but, we have a Flo who is even more confident! She charges at him! ...and he runs!! When she's in a particulary grouchy mood she just pecks him for the hell of it! Poor dog!
