hippy chick
I don't know what to do with my ex-bat Glenys. She hasn't laid for a month. her undercarriage feels really hard. She is hunched up and her comb is pale and floppy. She went to the vet 4 weeks ago because i thought she was egg bound. The vet did a scan and he said that she has a big fatty tumour just below her vent. He did give her oxcytocin which helped her produce an egg. But now her abdomen has gotten really swollen and she stands with her legs wide apart. She is eating and drinking and seems quite happy. She can still runaway from me when i try to catch her. I really dont want to loose her. I seem to be having a run of sick chucks at the moment, one lame, one with a wonky neck, and i lost one to sour crop last week. Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry to hear that . Did the vet think he could do anything for her? Perhaps you should let him see her again?
hippy chick
He didn't say, all that he said was that she would probably get worse, especially as the egg laying season progressed. He thinks that the hard lump of fat was probably stopping her from passing her eggs. I was quite shocked when i picked her up earlier she has gotten really heavy. I have been looking on the forums and i can't see anyone else that's had a similar problem. I think i will take her to the vet tomorrow. staceychristie
Mines was the same. Vet said that he could feel a lump (he's a poultry man too, so I feel safe). He said that the lump could be egg or tumor. Like you, we just lost one, so we're sensitive at the moment. He performed an internal vent exam, and couldn't see what it was. She's doing white liquidy poos, and is eating, drinking, and running with the rest. TREATMENT, he suggested 2ml liquid parafin a day orally, and to GENTLY massage the abdomen. We found this to work, and she's a bit softer now. She'd never really laid, and her party trick, was to go and sit on someone elses eggs and pretend they were hers. Bless 'em. Hope she feels better Stacey
Plum
So sorry, I had a girl with a fatty tumour in her abdomen but she also had tumour of ovary. She laid lots of really strange eggs and was up and down. In the end I had to make that hard decision when her quality of life was too bad. I think that she sounds like she has a build up of fluid in abdomen and it could be that the vet can drain some off to make her more comfortable and buy her some quality time. I would go back and see if she can be helped. Good luck.
staceychristie
Fluid in the abdomen? That sounds about it. The bum feels tight then soft day to day. Poppy is a strange one, and she's a real odd ball (sitting on everyone elses eggs to take all the credit), but I guess she's ok at the mo. Vet couldn't really advise to do anything different-and he's a good poultry man. Stacey
hippy chick
Her abdomen doesnt feel as if its filled with fluid. It feels really solid and hard. She still seems to be okay, still eating and drinking. I'm going to the vets on Monday.

staceychristie
Yes, good luck. Post back when you know what's happened. Stacey
hippy chick
I took Glenys back to the vets. He said that its definitely not fluid in her abdomen but it is a large tumour. She doesn't seem bothered by it at all and she seems to be coping well with it. He said to just give her liquid paraffin every couple of days to keep things moving. She does seem to be really content to just potter about as normal. And she is still eating and drinking. So i guess its just a case of keeping an eye on her. Plum
Long may she continue to potter happily with you
staceychristie
Same here. ours has a lump. Not going to operate, as doesn't know exactly what it was. Same as yours, that she's eating drinking and walking ok. Good luck, Stacey
hippy chick
I think that I might have to have Glenys PTS soon. She still seems to be getting around ok but she is massive now, she really waddles and her legs are looking very stiff, the poor girl looks the size of a turkey. It looks as if the tumour is starting to affect her crop. She has a massive swelling on the right side of her crop. She is still eating but every time she eats she struggles to swallow for ages after. You can see her pull her neck to the side as if to get the food to go down. Its awful really because she seems quite content just waddling up and down with the others.
Plum
So sorry, she's had another month of good quality life with you. It's so difficult saying goodbye but better than seeing them in trouble. You'll know when the time is right. Big hugs.
Egluntyne
She may be masking her discomfort so as not to lose her place in the pecking order. I'd say that it is time to think about taking her to the vet. Sorry.
Chucky Mama
Goodness HC I think that she sounds quite uncomfortable. I think that now bearing in mind it is about quality of life rather than quantity, the time has come to make a difficult decision
hippy chick
Yes I agree, she has done well to keep going this long. And I really don't want her to suffer. I will try and get her to the vets in the morning. Trouble is my vets are only open for a few hours on Saturday.
hippy chick
Well I still have Glenys. We went to the vets and asked him about having her pts. He says that we are not at that stage yet. Apparently her tumour has dropped farer down into her abdomen and that has helped her feel more comfortable. It isn't affecting lungs or her other organs. And even though she looks big he says she has only put a bit of weight on, she weighs 2 kilos. She is walking better and eating and drinking propperly. The advice was just to carry on as we are, but watch for her deteriorating. I will not allow her to suffer, and as soon as her quality of life goes then she will have to go back to the vet. Part of me is happy for her to be still enjoying life but I know that the day is going to come when she has to go. She has spent this afternoon clucking around with the rest of them and being all chickenly.
hippy chick
Well, today has been quite interesting. Glenys's "tuomour" started to poke out again this morning. It looked enormous . I bathed her and when i lifted her out of the water i could see even more of the tumour. I prodded it and it felt solid and it was kind of egg shape. I suddenly realised it was a lash I tried to grab hold of it but her vent started to bleed a bit. I took her back to the vet. He said its attached to her. So i insisted that it wasn't and it was indeed a lash. (he had never herd of one) He poked around and.....voila out it came! She is a bit quiet now and on antibiotics but it does seem that this could have been the problem all along. I guess only time will tell. I just hope that the shock of being poked and prodded doesn't do her any harm. Jilly
Chucky Mama
Poor girl, fingers firmly crossed here that she will get well soon
Plum
Must have been a big one. Did you take any pictures Really hope that she recovers now.
hippy chick
I didn't get chance to take a picture. The vet wanted to keep it, he said he's never seen one before. I really hope she gets better though, she deserves to after all that she has been through. I'm still a bit worried about her she seems really quiet now, not her usual self. I am hoping that it's just the stress of everything.
Plum
Probably a bit traumatised after giving birth to that. Hope she'll be better after a rest.
hippy chick
Well Glenys has been back to her old self today, She has been happily wandering around the garden all day. She gave me a merry run around the garden this afternoon when i tried to give her the meds! I know that she will probably die soon but she certainly seems to be living life to the full at the moment.
