eggalp
sorry this is so long, i am at a loss at what to do next................. Last week i thought Black was suffering from sour crop - not eating, big lump in her crop that wasn't going down, watery poos and sick when i picked her up. I emptied her crop myself and gave her maggots and live yoghurt for a few days and i thought she was on the mend. Two days later her crop was huge again and she wouldn't eat - back to square one . Last thusday i emptied her crop again and phoned the avian vets and took her on friday. Typical that when the vet put a syringe down her throat there was nothing there except some seeds and soil. The vet had a good feel and couldn't feel anything - no blockage or lumps or bumps, just said keep an eye on her and give her some baytril once a day. Yesterday she was bad again and her crop was huge. I picked her up and she was sick again (i hardly had to touch her underneath), so i emptied her crop and gave her some baytril. She had a bit of water an went straight back to bed. This morning she hasn't come out of the eglu - her crop is massive and she looks uncomfortable. The avian vets we go to is over a hundred mile round trip, so if i have to go again i dont want to go with an empty crop! I'm not sure wether to empty it again so she is more comfortable, or leave it and phone the vets tomorrow, i don't know wether to bother with the baytril - as i don't thing anything is getting down. I am also suspicious that maybe the liquid is coming into her crop from her stomach?? as she isn't drinking much and her crop is constantly filling up and her poos are just water - i don't know where all this water is coming from. I think if i don't do something she is going to starve to death - but im not sure what to do really? Im realy quite worried she will die. Christian
I would say definitely sour crop. Lots of advice **here** Either feeding natural yoghurt or pureed apple sauce to make the crop acidic would help her. I routinely dose my hens with Apple cider vinegar in the drinking water now. Emptying the crop VERY carefully, so she doesn't choke. Little and often with lots of breaks to allow her to breathe will make her more comfortable and allow the yoghurt to work when the crop is empty of fluids. Probiotic powder is also good. Good luck. eggalp
Hi thanks for the advice - i have already been trying this for a week though, thats why i decided to take her to the vets, but the vet couldn't find anything wrong. She has been having magotts and yoghurt and ACV for a week - no improvement. If it is sour crop, would there be a blockage? The vet couldn't feel anything, and neither can i. She just keeps filling up with liquid, and she's not eating or drinking much. I have been 'emptying' her for a week - is this normal for sour crop? Redwing
I think the ACV and yogurt may not be compatible and that ACV may make the situation worse but am sure someone will come along to confirm I would go down the probiotic route only so yougurt or something like Avipro which Christian recommended
Christian
Sour crop can be caused by a blockage, the crop then fills up and the yeast infection then takes hold. You said you were feeding her maggots, so that should help. The trouble with sour crop is that it once they get in once, they are more prone to it. FIngers crossed she makes a full recovery. eggalp
Black has been pts this morning she was literally starving to death and was quite weak. Took her this morning to the vets who said there was no blockage in the crop, so her muscles had probably wasted away. There was nothing else the vet could do, and she was so uncomfortable, so i thought it was the right decision. I am so gutted - she is the third one we have lost in 12 months. I don't know if i can face having any more, its just too heartbreaking. I feel really unlucky to have lost three in 12 months.

The Dogmother
Me too. I've only just read this thread, and it sounds as though she had a blockage further down her digestive tract, perhaps a tumour.
