2 new chicks today so far

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Just after some advice, out of 5 eggs 2 have hatched today and mum is doing a great job so far. First of all how long do I leave mum to sit on the other 3 eggs if they don't hatch? 2nd should I put some food and water in the nest box for them in the chick feeder etc?

Thanks Jonty

I put the chick crumb and drinker within reach of mum & chicks , so she didn't have to leave the eggs that hadn't hatched. Didn't stop the one chick from running all over the coop though - Muppet was not amused

I had 2 eggs hatch on the friday, one on saturday morning and one I helped hatch on sunday. The mum will get off the nest when she thinks all viable ones have hatched ( you may not agree though ! )

Did you candle the eggs? - hopefully the others will hatch over the next couple of days - she should sit tight on them.

Put a shallow drinker/saucer of water in with them, but put some stones/marbles in there - it'll stop them drowning in the water but still let them drink, the shiny marbles encourage them to peck too.

Yep, as meezers said ... leave chick crumb in the nest in a small bowl :D

I'd leave her 'till Sunday and then candle them to see if there's anything going on with the others :)

Hi Jonty

were the eggs all due today do you know?

Personally, I'd have to leave them a few more days. Mine were one day apart which I didn't know prior to hatch.

On the day before due date, I put chick crumbs and a small drinker in the house and within reach of my broody. This way she stayed sitting on the later arrival but could refuel herself.

I'm no expert but I'd certainly be hanging on a bit longer, just in case!

I'd also give it another 24 hours , especially if the broody is still sitting- she probably knows more than you  If she thinks the eggs are no good, she'll kick them out or leave the nest. Mine hatched 48 hours apart, and even then I had to help the latecomer.
