Shelley
The WiR is up - though had to admit defeat and get a handyman in with a powerful drill, some clamps and a lot of DIY common sense. All I did was lay the concrete hardstanding, but that proved so uneven he had to resort to some cunning carpentry tricks to get the panels to screw together. Bought the hens yesterday and now it's those 'first baby' nerves all over again. The Omlet pellet and water feeders don't clip onto the fence panels. Anyone else got a solution for that? In terms of feeding and drinking do you measure out a daily amount or fill both up and let the hens get through them. Can they be trusted to exercise dietary control. We got our first egg this morning which was ceremonially poached, but I noticed the yolk could be easily separated from the white after cooking. Sign of a fresh egg or one that's undercooked? Gelbel
Hi Shelly - welcome to the wonderful world of chook keeping. Re amount of food and drink - fill them up - they'll take what they want and they won't get fat on chook feed. It's too many (non veggie) treats that can make them lardy - just like us! People use some IKEA kitchen bar thingies (sorry I can't be more helpful on the name). I use a mini green house shelf wire thing held in place on the side of the run - I did have to cut the shelf so that the glug and grub could hang on the top/side edge as the mesh was slightly too small for their hooks. Others use those radiator airers - but I found they were not the right width for my glug and grub - so I use them for hanging other types of feeders and drinkers. Re the egg - it sometimes takes a while for the girls to get the hang of laying so, although perfectly OK for eating, their eggs can be a bit 'hit and miss'. I've found with all my girls the first couple of whites are a slightly different texture to what you'd expect.
