Snoxy
I picked up Violet this morning and noticed she had a couple of creatures crawling near her skin...having done lots of research here and on the net they look like lice. 7 out of my 12 girls appear to have a few...although they probably all have them/will get them?! I popped to the local horsey place and bought some Battles Red Mite Powder...it says it is suitable for both red mite and lice. I usually buy Barrier Red Mite Powder and dust the nest boxes. Guess I should have dusted them with red mite powder regularly. I have clearly become complacent I feel very miserable that my girls have lice...albeit just seen a few on some of them...but I am very worried they are going to become badly infested very quickly...and will have a real battle on my hands. I guess the more girls you have the harder it is to combat. I have read lots and lots here and am still a little at a loss as to what to do next. Do you think I should check them again tomorrow and re-apply red mite powder and persevere with that or get some Xeno 450 straightaway and use that? Thank you. A very miserable/feel like I have let my girls down Lou
Ain't Nobody Here
Don't feel bad, it's just one of those things - they pick them up easily from wild birds . Lice are relatively easy to get rid of. Have you read this info about lice and mites? I treated lice successfully with Johnsons spray - available from Pets at Home .
Snoxy
Thank you so much for your reply...I will be hot-footing it down to Pets at Home as soon as I drop my daughter off at nursery tomorrow morning I was hoping to get rid of the lice without having to withdraw eggs

Snoxy
Just found out Johnsons Anti-mite spray has been withdrawn from my local PAH! Just ordered two online...so have to wait 3-5 days for delivery...just can't get it locally...grrrrrr! Two of my girls that I looked at this morning have lots of the little critters around their rear ends I am so confused My concern is that it could be a vicious circle...especially as I have 12 girls...should I do all/some of the things below asap or will the critters re-infest the dust bath, hen house, nestboxes etc or will they stay mostly on the girls? Should I wait until I have sprayed them with the Johnsons spray (if it arrives!) or applied more of the Battles Red Mite Powder tonight...need to apply more to their rear end areas for definite! This is my plan...but I need advice PLEASE! It is difficult to apply Battles Red Mite Powder on my own...so will have to wait for another adult to help...i.e. husband...this evening! I will remove all earth/sand from dust bath...put fresh play sand in...should I add diatom earth? and Battles Red Mite Powder or something else? Should I remove all shreaded paper from nestboxes and add new...dust with Battles Red Mite Powder and/or something else? Should I remove all aubiose from floor of hen house and dust with Battles Red Mite Powder and/or something else? What should I disinfect plastic hen house walls and wooden roosting bars with? Should I be doing anything else?? I think I will grab another coffee first and try and calm down...just can't stop scratching...so horrible! A cyber hug from another hen keeper would be a bonus Lou Edited June 14, 2010 by Guest
Chucky Mama
Make sure that the louse powder that you are using is an insecticidal rather that a repellant. Repellant deters critters but doesn't kill them.

Snoxy
Thank you Claret I have looked at the thread over and over Sorry can't see what alternative stuff you use?
Snoxy
Sorry Claret just taken another look...I think you are referring to the Xeno 200?
The Dogmother
No, I was referring to the Buz Busters powder
Snoxy
OK...thank you Claret Should I get to work on the things below or wait until the Johnsons Anti-Mite Spray arrives or I have managed to apply some more of the Battles Red Mite Powder this evening? Surely the dust bath, nest boxes etc. will just become re-infested if I do it before? Replace earth/sand in dust bath, replace shreaded paper in nestboxes, put down fresh aubiose on hen house floor...dust with diatom and red mite powder? Should I be doing anything else?? Sorry to be a total pain...think I have gone into a state of 'lice overload'
The Dogmother
No worries You won't do any harm by cleaning out and treating the housing now, then repeat again weekly to keep on top of any newly hatched bugs. Use the spray on the birds when it arrives, then again a week alter until you can't see any more lice.
Redwing
Hi I have Johnsons lice spray and live about 40 mins from you, I can pop down with some later and give you a hand to sort the problem if you like? It would be about 8-9pm though if its lice they wont be living in the house so once the birds are treated you'll be ok, if its mite they will be living in the house
Snoxy
Thank you Claret...I will get going as soon as I get back from the school run Ahhhh Redwing...thank you so much for the offer to come and help me...you are very kind I was feeling so misog about it all until I read your reply...have to admit it bought tears to my eyes...my 16 year old son thought I was totally barmy bless him I will do as Claret suggests...then I will apply some more powder to them this evening when DH gets home...I need to do them more thoroughly now that I have seen more of the little critters I will apply some of the Johnsons when/if it arrives too Fingers crossed my girls will be lice free asap...just hate the fact those horrible little critters are living on my girls...although they seem totally not bothered...they aren't scratching or anything Thank you once again, Claret and Redwing...feeling much calmer and happier now Lou
