hippy chick
I'm getting my new ex-bats tomorrow from Haslingden in Lancashire. Just wondered if anyone else are collecting some from there? I am really nervous about introducing them to my existing girls, how difficult is it?
the bradley bunch
i've had my ex-bats for coming up to 3 weeks now... can't offer any advice regarding introductions as we were first timers, but i just wanted to wish you luck and say it's a great thing you're doing re-homing more ex-bats

hippy chick
I have to be there between 3 and 3-30 too . I'll be the one with the kid with two tone hair . I'm really excited seem to have been waiting ages! Jilly
hippy chick
Well I'm back from picking up the new girls. They look really bald, I knew that they would be bad but i don't think i was prepared for the completely naked look! One of them only has a few tail feathers and nothing else There is one that doesn't have any tail feathers or indeed any knickers on at all. It looks like someone has been pecking at her vent so I've treated her with purple spray. She is very quiet and hiding in the nest box at the moment. Tbh I'm pretty worried about her. migsy
I thought that they didn't knowingly rehome sick hens? I hope she picks up for you. I'm getting some from Haslingden in August. The BHWT lady Adele said that the farmer gets rid of some every 6-8 weeks so I guess mine will be from the same farm. What is the procedure? Do you get to choose the hens or are they just handed over? I've booked 3. Good luck. Whatever happens, they are better off with you. x
Chucky Mama
There is some info on introductions here if you haven't seen it already.[CLICK]
hippy chick
I had to que up with my boxes and pay for them. I had originally agreed to take 3 but when i got there they asked if i could take 5 instead as they had collected more than they expected. Then we went to the distribution area and they just handed them over. Unfortunately we didn't get to pick. I wondered if i got the scabbier ones because i have homed ex-bats before. It did seem that the newbies and people with kids got the pretty ones. I don't think that any are ill, its just the one with the bloody vent, I think she's probably a bit shocked I guess it has been a really stressful day for them. migsy
I thought that you probably wouldn't choose. I'll have to bring my kids! I guess it ends up more satisfying in the long run though if you manage to bring back to health the really scraggy looking ones. I'm looking forward to getting them but a bit nervous about it. It is strange to think that my future hens are cramped in a tiny cage right now Good luck with yours
hippy chick
Yes it's definitely worth it. I just find it a bit upsetting. Not the fact that i get the scabbier ones just that there are so many more stuck in those disgusting battery farms. I will post some pics when they have settled. I'm sure they will be fine. They just take a while to readjust.
Guest
I've only just seen your post, we picked 4 up from Adele today too, we got there about 3.30pm amd as we were leaving there was a family arriving in a 4x4 but they were the only other people there, don't suppose that was you? Here are our 4 new girls; Sadie, Maggie, Penny and Rita http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5656145&l=263bf7088d&id=568396756 they're settling in nicely. We originally had our name down for 3 but she asked if we could take more. Apparently instead of 300, they were given 427 hens but Adele said she won't have a problem finding homes for them, it was just easier to re-home as many as poss on the day. These girls are our 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th ex batts.

Guest
..... I wondered if i got the scabbier ones because i have homed ex-bats before. It did seem that the newbies and people with kids got the pretty ones.I.... I don't think that's the case as we've had several from Adele before and our new girls look in pretty good order, it's just luck of the draw. I think they're all pretty, feathers or not Give them some 'life guard poultry tonic' really great for featherage.

Hens@HalfMoonLane
Seems like it was an Omlet day out at Haslingden today. I arrived about 2.50 and left about 3.05. We have a red Alfa Romeo Mito and I came with my 4 year old son. OH stayed in the car I saw a 4x4 leave with a wire dog cage with about 6 hens in - anyone here? A few cars turned up after us and I remember a couple with some very large cardboard boxes. Should have borrowed Mostins Omlet badge! We got 2 and they are just standing around at the moment. I'm not convinced they'll make it to bed themselves. One quite well feathered and one less so. It's the 4th set of hens I have had from Adele and have had no problems intergrating them each time with existing ones. I keep the new ones in the Eglu run for up to 2 weeks (although I would leave them longer If I felt it necessary) and last time I let them out supervised to freerange one day and I had no problems from them on. The time before I did the same but they took a few freeranges before I felt happy to leave them together but I've not had any fighting, each time the new ones have submitted to the older ones straightaway so I suppose I've been very lucky. I think Adele does a brilliant job - I'm completely in awe of the hard work she and her helpers do.

hippy chick
Yes she does do a fantastic job. Its a shame that she has to though, its time that they banned battery farming.
