Leaving Cube door open all night

Recommended Posts

Is anyone leaving the door open all night ???

Obviously the run is secure..I worry because by the time I wake to let them out 06:30, it is already sunny and I worry they are too hot in there.

Will they rest ok ..if the door is left open ??

They'll be fine. I leave my door open all year round, and they come to no harm. The Eglu and Cube are insulated which means it shouldn't be too hot in there, but provided your run is secure and predator-proof, leave it open by all means.

Another one who leaves the door open all year, except last winter when it was well below zero for a long spell - but then they don't need to get up until quite late anyway.

They will be fine. The sun was on my cube all day today and yet the inside stayed just barely warm. It is very well designed to cope with this weather.

A friend of mine left the house door open so it would be easier for her chickensitter but was woken at 4am by fox who hadn't got in but there were a lot of loose feathers around, distressed chickens but no injury thank goodness. :(

I did leave my cube door open all the time and they all seemed to sleep inside. I put an automatic door opener on it which shuts when it goes dark and it seems 2 out of 6 seem to prefer sleeping in th run I preume because of the weather. For 3 days now I've had an egg laid in the run :-S

WELL !!

I wasn't expecting that !..Looks like I'm the only one who gets up a 06:00am to open the door and then goes back to bed !!!

I like the idea of the automatic electric door opener though..I didn't realise they would fit on a Omlet Cube ( I do like my gadgets!!)

I'm into my third week now with these chocks..Any still no eggs !!!

Dont worry i am sure you will get eggs soon :?

If it is there first ever time laying dont be surprised if it is a funny shape because it will get better ...

And yes i also leave my doors on all my coops open at night ...

Saves me getting up at half 5 ... Then again i would be awake any way with all my cockerels cock - a - doodle - dooing

I used to get up at the crack of dawn to let them out but these days unless its serously cold I just leave them to it, and yep 4.30 with the dawn chorus they are up & stuffing their little faces, Its cooler that time of day so they can get lots of water on board before the temp rises so much and they retreat to the shade of the table the eglu sits on (the side & roof is shaded that end of the run

I feel like a bad chicken mummy now!

I am too afraid to leave the door open as a fox could dig under our run. I am pretty sure the dogs would alert me to it before a fox could actually have the time ot get in, but I am still tooo afraid.

I don't usually let the girls out until about 7am, but they don't seem to mind, they neever make a fuss/noise. They have a wooden house and although it's not as hot here as in some parts at the moment, I am a little worried in case they get too hot now. :?

I do not feel brave enough to leave the Omlet open all night either. I like the fact that I know for definite a fox cannot get in their coop but then my ex-bats do sit quietly waiting and are let out anytime from 5.30-6.30am in the summer.

I would like to know about the electronic door thing too if it's fits on the eglu.

After reading this thread the OH and I decided to leave the cube door open last night but in the end we just couldn't do it! Even though they're perfectly safe in the run, we were worried something bad would happen but also didn't fancy Colin cock-a-doodle-dooing in the early hours (he's loud enough with the door shut!) so ended up closing it.

I am so glad I found this thread, I have been leaving the door open of my !gogreen! at the weekends only as I am up before 7 to let the little darlings out in the week and I do like a lie in. we are going away in October and my sis is going to look after the babies but it would be difficult for her to shut the door at night and then come round again at the crack of dawn to open it again, I said to her just to leave it open and then immediately starting worring about whether it would be too cold for them but as I have read here that loads of you leave the doors open all year it has really put my mind at rest. Thanks guys!

Quick question though do you also leave the food in all the time ? Again I take mine in, in the week but leave it in sometimes on Fri and Sat night do you think just doing this occasionaly will attract rats?
