Mollie333
Hi, Sadly my Pilkie died this morning. She was not very old and started laying on Mothers day. She was a great pet and always loved a fuss. She seemed OK yesterday, then she laid two eggs.. One in the morning as usual then another at noon, the second one was in tact but soft shelled, on the floor of the run. She then went back into the nesting box and just lay there untill this morning, then i looked in thinking she might be laying, but she was then on the floor of the coop, still alive. I brought her in the house to look over for mites, and in her vent and my dad was looking in her throat as she was gasping for air and then she just died.. Really sudden. Any idea's of what this was caused by? She seemed fine before she laid that soft shelled intact egg. Thanks Molly

Plum
I'm sorry you lost her she was lovely It may not have had anything to do with the eggs. If she was gasping then it could have been lots of things. Shortness of breath could have been anaemia so a bleed or redmite. It could have been due to pressure inside her abdomen or chest again lots of causes. It could have been her heart. I don't know but a post mortem may throw up something I haven't had one done with mine. One of mine died suddenly and I'll never know what happened. Mollie333
She had like a fit before she died, too. I knew it was her time to go. Thankyou everyone.

Chucky Mama
Oh Mollie, that is really sad. She perhaps haemorrhaged internally whilst laying or something like that. It was quick so it sounds like you couldn't have done anything to help her other than what you did. I know that you check your girls out regularly but it would be worth giving them all a good look over tomorrow. Have they been Flubenvetted recently? Might be worth doing them all if now as part of your health check.

Mollie333
I gave them vermx for three days in the water. Never used flubevent. Thanks everyone
Chucky Mama
It would be a good idea to give them a course of Flubenvet Mollie. It is the best way to make sure that they are free of worms. By all means carry on giving the verm-x in between Flubenvet which should be done 3-4 times a year. You can do any new birds whilst they are in quaranteen before introducing them to the rest of the flock. That way you know that they are all covered Of course this may have nothing to do with the death of Pilkie but it is still sensible to do it for the health of the flock. Egluntyne
That is sad news mollie. Could have been related the soft egg maybe. Occasionally this sort of stress can lead to a heart attack. Hope you are OK.
