First 'Hen day' :)

Recommended Posts

I've been having these little girls come and see me when i've got a chicken out having a cuddle, so i arranged for

13 little girls to come to have a bit of a hen day a my house. it started today at around 8:00am, and finished at 1:00pm.

First of all i showed them how the run is fox proof, and told them about the predators, and even showed them the fox trap and how it works (so we can humanly get rid of the foxes). I showed them the fox holes in my garden as well.

Then they fed the chooks some mealworms, after filling the food and water stations up. I told them about what the food is for, chick crumbs for the chicks obviously, the layers pellets for the hens and the growers for the turkeys. and a handful of corn is allowed in the evening.

I then let them pick some big cooking apples and some blackberries, and then ate them with orange squash that i prepared for them. We also picked some rhubarb, which they didn't like to try much!

They asked about what colour the pooh was, so i told them about the 'curry poos' because they don't urinate

and they all laughed and thought it was funny.

I told them about the broody, and how the eggs that we eat are never fertilized, and that chickens are good pets.

I also explained that when they crouch down there ready for the eggs to be fertilized to make them into chicks.

Then i showed them Betty, and explained why they need Grit, i showed them her crop, vent ( ), wattles and comb.

They then helped by cleaning out the Coops, and poo picking.

Then the day finished with cuddling of the chicks and hens.

It was a good day :)

Edited for terrible spelling..

Well done you,

and how clever to use child slave labour to clean them out :lol:

I back on to a primary school and was thinking of offering the children a chance to come and see how chickens really are, think I will now after seeing your post.

Great idea. :clap::clap:

Thanks everyone, when i'm older i hope to do this for people and teach them about chooks, im only 13.

Two of the girls came today (Milly and Gracie) with a picture of 'Blanche' which is now hanging up in the garage near the food, lovely girls. they also asked if there is going to be another Hen day, so i will arrange one there, maybe goody bags and chocolate based prizes for cleaning out the coops. Anyways, the two girls came today and asked if i need anything doing! I said you dont have to and they said.. ''So we cant? :( '' So i let them clean out the coops and fill up food water stations ect, they know an awful lot about chooks now. They have named 2 of my chicks 'Dippy and Big ben' and somehow they can tell the difference  ..

There such enthusiastic girls! Amazing little helpers.:D
