Chooksrus
Hi all, First post to introduce ourselves and say hello. Planned on getting chickens next spring but after being given a 'cube' and picking up 4 ex-batts a week ago, we are up and running quicker than we thought! So, 'we' are Me, the Wife and 2 kids aged 4, 1 dog and now 4 ladies - Cookie, Clucky, Crumble and Hogarth. So far, 1 week on, 6 eggs in total- 3 edible. No problems encountered as such yet and they are all finding their feet and seem to settling in well. For the last couple of nights, 1, then another, and tonight all 4 were settled to sleep in the nesting box Pecking order established and the biggest, loveliest of the birds is the on the bottom rung. The Kids love them and the Wife even more so. They are much more endearing and intriguing than we ever thought they would be with their lovely noises and scratching around. I'm having a good look a round different topics and I'll be posting lots of questions soon, so until then, bye-bye.

Fairly new to chickens myself but I have found they are fantastic to have in the garden- they bring it alive somehow. The forum is a great place for information and the forum posters a friendly, knowledgable bunch of folk, so keep popping in! Chooksrus
Thanks everyone for the welcome! Yes, very lucky to be given a cube. I have got an old dismantled shed which I had planned to build a coop from but that was going to take some time as we have other priorities. My Wife used to work in a school which attempted to keep chickens until they were all killed by a fox before they even received the cube (Kept in a rabbit hutch). They instead kept 6 rabbits in it instead but it has sat empty for a year until the Headteacher offered it to us! Not quite free as we'll be making a donation to the school but still a real result! I'm so glad we've taken the plunge though. I like them racing out of the cube in the mornings and already being in ready for bed when I go and lock them in. Today, I Iclosed the door for a little while to stop one of them hiding in the coop so that she would stay out and get some food.I came out a little later to find another at the top of the steps , waiting, making clucking noises, asking for the door to be opened so she could get to bed! They are characters that's for sure. Best of all though - another egg waiting for us this evening!
