skye
Hi all One of our Orpingtons Roxy is prone to broodiness and we have just broken her second bout this year with the trusty broody cage (which she seems to quite like these days!) She snapped out of it absolutely fine. However I've noticed that she's suddenly started dropping feathers in handfuls all over the run and garden bless her. It's not just a few feathers she may have pecked from her breast during the recent broody phase, they're everywhere! It's started within days of coming out of broodiness too! Do these two events often happen consecutively like this, or is she just a glutton for punishment?! Poor soul, I would have hoped to have built up her strength again before a big moult started I'll give her some nice tuna and avipro today I think. Any experiences or advice welcome. thanks skye x
Jools
When I let my broodies sit, they normally moult within 2-3 weeks of hatching, so yes it is normal. We're also coming up to moulting time and I'm sure this odd weather we're having will trigger some too.
Griffin
My broody Silkie always starts moulting around 10 days after hatching. It's never a full moult, usually just a neck moult. I guess it's hormonal. My Brahmas don't seem to moult as much, which is a good job for Francesca because she removes a large quantity of feathers to line her nest
Laura & CTB
I get exactly the same with Guinevere, my black cochin - a few days of feathers everywhere! Last time it was the fluffy feet feathers that went (they have very k"Ooops, word censored!"bly legs)
skye
Thanks guys, most reassuring! Hopefully it is a blessing in disguise and she can get the moult over before the weather gets too cold. skye x
The Dogmother
It's normal, don't worry. Due to the lack of nutrients while they sit on eggs and aren't eating properly.
