Help Fifi has been attacked by rabbit

Recommended Posts

My Ex-bat Fifi has just been attacked by the rabbit. :(

Somehow he managed to find his way into the run and has bitten Fifi  . She is quite bald and he has bitten the skin on her chest. Both sides of her pectoral muscle are exposed. :!: The wound is about 4 inch long and 2 inch wide. She is not bleeding but she is very quiet. I have treated her with purple spray, and put her in the cat box in the conservatory.

I phoned an emergency vet and she said that so long as she isn't bleeding leave her till morning and then take her in.

I phoned another couple of vets and no one seems to want to do anything for her :(

What should I do :?: I really am in a panic.

Oh no, I'm so sorry! I'd be in a panic too.

I have no advice on the injury but you've spoken to a vet and they've said wait until morning... so until then, I'd have done exactly what you've done (put her in a cat basket and bring her in).

Can you pull any blinds in the conservatory? You'd probably want to keep her in the dark for a good while in the morning to keep her calm until you can get her to the vet.

Also, is it WARM in there? Just thinking, she could go cold with the shock and she does dound a little shocked, bless her :(

Fingers crossed but it's good news that she;s not bleeding.

Hopefully someone with good advice will be along soon.

Thanks Tutti, :)

I think she should be warm enough, but just in case I will bring her into the living room. Its really warm in there. She is just stood up in the cat box and doesn't seem to want to lay down. Do you think I need to give her any pain relief :?:

My OH has just tried to put some water into the cage for her but she gave him a nasty peck  you should have herd him scream :lol::lol::lol:

I could kill the rabbit  he has caused more damage. I'm getting him castrated that should sort him ( bunny not OH)

Thanks

Jilly

I have just taken Fifi to the vets, I had to leave her there for him to give her a local anaesthetic and staple her up. I must admit I'm quite :anxious: . The last time I had to leave one behind for treatment she didn't come home :(

It does look bad you can see a full skinless breast and a bare thigh and drumstick  ( I think it's put me off eating chicken for life :vom: ) But the vet says it looks worse than it it is and she should be fine in a few days. :D

I guess that's one advantage of having such loose skin---the underlying structures don't get seriously damaged with a bit of luck! One of my dogs bit one of my chooks a couple of weeks ago, 2" gash along the side of her neck, right through the skin. I took her to the vets that evening (9pm---££££ ) although she said it could wait till the next morning but I wouldn't have slept all night! anyway she had stitches and antibiotics and is now absolutely fine!

I'm sure your girl will be fine too!

I have just brought Fifi back from the vets. He has closed her wound and it looks like there are loads of staples in her chest and her leg :vom: She seems really sorry for herself, poor little thing :boohoo:

The vet said to keep her confined to the dog crate for a few days, I don't think she will be to pleased about that  She Is eating loads so I guess they didn't bother giving her anything whilst she was at the vets :shameonu:

And at £56 it wasn't to expensive. She has to go back for the staples out in 10 days time (that's if she doesn't peck them out herself).

So fingers crossed

Fifi has been really quiet all day. She has spent most of the day stood hunched up in the corner of her cage. She has eaten a bit and is drinking. I'm hoping that she is just feeling a bit sore and that is whats making her feel so off it. She laid an egg at bed time and then a softee during the night. She was laid on newspaper and the egg stuck her to the newspaper. It took my OH ages to clean her up this am. I have put her on a towel tonight.

I hope that she starts to pick up, i feel so guilty for what the bunny did.

Poor Fifi. She must be feeling very sorry for herself. It sounds as though you are doing everything you can for her.

I had a chicken attacked by a fox a 3 years ago and she also had a nasty wound, but with antibiotics she made a full recovery. Here's hoping for Fifi.

My bunny sometimes gets in the chicken run. He's never attacked the girls, if anything, it's the other way around. But you've encouraged me to be more careful about it. Thanks.

£56 for all that work, it cost me £58 just to take my cat to the vet to be looked at as she was being sick and not eating just to be told there was nothing wrong with her but have some antibiotics anyway i would hate to think how much they would charge me for what your vet has done

She seemed really down this morning. Just stood in the corner of her cage, not eating or drinking. So I decided to put her outside in the run with the others. She perked up and started to eat every time one of the others came near :D I guess its the competition for food.

I have brought her back inside for the night but have noticed that one of her staples has come out and left an opening about a cm long. Her flesh looks really green and bruised. I think its more from the stapling than the actual attack. I'm hoping that the wound will still heal over, because my chook vet is away for the weekend, and I don't fancy taking her to a normal vet.

I'm hoping that she should start to feel better soon the metacam should be in her system by now its just that open bit of her wound that worries me.

I have brought one of her friends inside with her for company. I'm hoping that it should keep her interested enough to eat. I had planned on letting them sleep together in the dog crate but her buddy keeps eyeing her wound up so I have put her in the cat box next to her (She has a bad limp so hopefully keeping her movements restricted should help her).

Don't worry too much about that bit of wound it will heal if you keep it clean. Pop some purple spray or vet powder on it and make sure no bits of feathers or dust get in it. You can clean it with boiled water if it gets dirty.

If you ring the vet's nurse they may be able to give you something to put on it on have another suggestion. No doubt she is on antibiotics which will prevent infection. Onward and upward now. :D

Well Fifi had her staples removed yesterday, all twenty six of them :!::shock::roll: She was ever so good we laid her on her back and she just went to sleep

There is still a wound about an inch long which has not closed. The wonderful Mr Patrick gave me some Intra-site gel to put in the wound. Its amazing stuff the wound looks dry and scabby and more healed already :D

I have to wash her wound out twice a day and put the gel inside the hole. She is so calm when i'm doing it and her treat is to finish of the dogs dinner  trouble is the dogs bowl was full todat and I was on the phone to the vet, my hubby let her eat a full bowl of dog food her crop was massive :!::!::!:
