Car reviews - Punto now - updated

Recommended Posts

Hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to find out more about a 2003 Renault Clio 1.2. Could do with reading safety reviews, when cambelts need changing etc. DD is on a new to her used car hunt :? Thanks

For car reviews, comparisons etc, I always start with the What Car website:

http://www.whatcar.com - it has a search box for reviews, remember to click on "Used" first so you get the right model. That gives you a link to review, running costs, owners' reviews etc

You could also google for an owners' forum - they can be very helpful. We found a good forum for old BMWs with lots of enthusiastic people ready to advise!

I've had a 53 reg and an 04 reg Clio - both 1.5 diesels

They were both lovely cars and very reliable

Not very comfy for long journeys but can hold their own on a motorway nicely and not too noisy or tinny feeling in high winds

I racked the second one up to 90,000 miles over about 20 months before i had to give it back (co car) and it never gave me any problems whatsoever

I also got 70+ MPG out of mine (to be fair it was mainly on motorways though) the engine was described as the most frugal on the market at the time I had mine

The only negative I heard was that the bonnet catch wasnt great and there were a few cases of the bonnet flying up while the car was moving - was on Watchdog and everything, everyone was asked to return their Clio for a check and a retrospective mod if necessary

If I needed to buy a car of my own I would probably go for a Clio or a Kia Rio - both lovely cars

She's driving me potty at the moment. Has the chance to buy a lovely Punto with FSH and only 1 owner with low mileage but it's dearer than others elsewhere. However, this car is "known" so we know it's kosher. I then saw this Clio again with FSH but someones told her that they have engine problems  I know some may have but not all of them.

Arrrrggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I know exactly how you feel. We've just spent weeks looking for a used Corsa for my DS. We finally got him one at auction, seems ok. I think Parkers are good for used car reviews, they also give a guide price.

My DD's current car is an old L reg corsa and it's been an absolute cracker :)

OK, she rejected the Punto the other week :wall::wall: but her BF has now found another one. So any reviews on Punto's please-lol I think it's the 1.2 active.

All I really know is that it's a nice blue and the seats are co-ordinated  (BF thinks this is a plus lord knows why) part service history and her current car (which she bought off DH boss' son when he passed his test) was bought from the same garage and he will give her something as a p/ex. Spooky as we had no idea of this-lol

I had an '07 punto 1.2 active to tide me over while on maternity leave. It was my first Fiat, after previously having a ford focus and skoda Octavia as company cars. Unfortunately I was less than impressed, I felt the interior was a very poor quality and I had the glovebox catch and boot cover replaced several times under warranty due to cheap plastic components failing :( Also, while I am certainly no speed machine I found the 1.2 punto under powered and not suitable for regular motorway use or if you regularly have a passenger. My mum is a big Clio fan, and if you can get past the badge you get a lot of car with a skoda fabia :)

DD's like me. Expensive taste but no money - lol Show me two things with no prices on and I always go for the most expensive.

She's going to look at it tomorrow after work. She's had a run of bad luck with the Corsa and has decided she just wants rid. She's had it broken into the other week (or left one door unlocked and they got in that way  ) so a stolen laptop as she'd left it under a seat :wall: lost keys last weekend which have cost her £110 to sort out and on Saturday some drunken teenagers walked past and attacked her wing mirror  They woke us up with the noise at 2am but then did a runner. Luckily DH was able to put the mirror back together.

Sorry, I've waffled

Well DD went to look at it, had a test drive and bought it. She gets it on Saturday :D We didn't realise but he has known her Godfather (DH's boss) for 30 years so the garage owner is putting new brake discs on, full valet and taxing it for six months. However, the best bit is that she has got a p/ex price on her Corsa of only £100 less than she paid for it 2 1/2 years ago!
