Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

Can you suggest anything to help my ex bat? She has been fine up until yesterday when I went to do a big clean of the coop and found her huddled inside all by herself.I lifted her out and realised that she was as light as a feather! I checked her feathers and saw that she had lice so have treated her for that,but she is barely eating and drinking and her tail is down,she is just hunched up, not moving and really listless.I have seperated her from the rest of the girls.I noticed today that her droppings (the few that she has done),almost look like scrambled egg and there is blood in them as well. I am worming her and putting poultry spice in her food and apple cider vinegar in her water - also gave her pro-biotic yoghurt this morning,but she has barely touched it.I can't afford a vets bill,but I really don't want her to suffer,she was such a character.

I think blood in the droppings can be a sign of coccidiosis. You might want to have a read up on that?

I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along to offer some advice shortly. Hope your little hen picks up soon.

she needs a vet, you could try pdsa they might help. a course of baytrill is about £15 but depends on vets.she def needs water & food you could try syringing some yogurt and mash mix into her and water in small quantities your local chemist would be able to help you with a syringe you dont need the needle part.

 

oTHer option is vets and have her PTS as she may be too far gone for treatment.

 

i would try and treat her first to give her a chance i know cash is a problem but i would alwasy give them that one last chance unless they were def to far gone and it was best for the animal.

My young hen Flora had Coccidiosis a couple of weeks ago and she is fine now, she even laid her first egg yesterday.

If her poo is runny and has blood in it this is definately a sign of Cocci. when Flora had it she wasn't eating but she was still drinking. It is caused by an internal parasite that causes the gut to bleed. the hen is more susceptible to it when they are low. It sounds like Hilda really needs to see a vet it only cost me £20.00 for Flora, that was for the consultation and the medication. Can you syringe water into her beak, the vet also suggested baby food as it was smooth but full of nutrients.

Well Hilda is still with us, we managed to get her to drink some water this morning( syringe) and she has taken some food out of my hand and also nibbled on some melon. There hasn't been any more blood either. We are going to bring her in tonight and give her a good looking at and maybe a warm bath . I keep going our to check on her and praying every time that I go out that she's still with us. If she's any worse tomorrow it's definitely a trip to the vet.

Try offering her some cat food, or tuna grated cheese or anything that she has found tasty in the past. I would also give her some flat lucozade or other glucose drink. I hope that she picks up for you.

You can get coxoid without a prescription which treats the coccidiosis. You need to start treating it early to prevent damage to the bowel but blood is a definate sign. If you can get her to take it or syringe it in I understand it works pretty quickly. Or you get Baycox from the vet.

Keeping her hydrated is important and giving some nutrition. You can try something like Critical Care formula

The treatments last a week and hopefully she'll pick up quick and do well but don't wait.

 

I lost a chicken to it recently but my vet kept me waiting 5 days for result of a specimen to come back and the damage was done. I wish I had started her on treatment when it was suspected.

Well she has perked up! She is eating and drinking and her poo is looking a bit more normal . I am still keeping a close eye on her though! Am hoping it was just a blip.

Hilda has gone down hill again so we are taking her to the vets. There hasn't been any more blood since the very first small amount, but she is just sleeping all of the time and struggling to get to her feet. Hope the vet can help.

Poor Hilda has gone to chicken heaven. The vet said I had done everything right and was impressed that she had lasted so long. She thinks she had a chronic illness as she had gone down hill do fast, I asked about people had suggested on here but she didn't think so. I will really miss her, she was such a character.
