beach chick
Ditto, my buff orp has been moulting v-e-r-y slowly for about 4 months now. nothing dramatic, a bit of baldness around the head, a few feathers drifting behind her in a delicate fashion which belies her size (and of course, no eggs). Spot the speckledy has been dropping the odd feather for about a fortnight, but literally just one or two here and there. Lavender, the arucana, started moulting the day before yesterday. if you looked in the run, you would honestly think murder had been committed!!! there are grey-blue feathers EVERYWHERE, every time she so much as twitches there are another 20 zillion feathers behind her, the nest box is full of them, the poo trays are full of them, I could re-stuff every pillow in the house with the debris. yet, she still looks fully feathered!! it seems really weird they way they all do it differently! Lavenders_Blue
I agree, they do all seem to be different. My first 3 ex batts to moult dropped feathers like mad, looked tatty very quickly, had lots of new feather spikes and stopped laying. My last hen to moult (Dorothy) looked tatty before she started her moult has been gently dropping feathers for a few weeks, but doesn't actually seem to look any worse, I can't see any new feather spikes (although there must be some!) oh and she is still producing an egg about every other day Oh yes, and the others all looked totally miserable whilst they were moulting. Dorothy looks as bright and perky as ever and spends a good deal of her time squaring up to new girl Lottie through the divide!
beach chick
just thought I would come back to this... Chardonnay, my silver sussex started moulting the day before yesterday - and boy, can you tell!!! There are feathers everywhere, her usually sleek coat (?) looks as if she's had a blowdry by Sweeney Todd, she's got bald spots round her bum - all in all she looks like a tramp! meanwhile, Ditto and Lavender who were moulting in August are still getting in shape, and new feathers are still coming through... and I dont think either of them has laid since August. come on Lavender, I want my blue eggs again! enough freeloading girls
katek
why do they moult in the cold? Wouldn't it be more logical to do it a month earlier?
