Cheapish coop + run on ebay ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm not sure which one you mean. how many chickens does it say you could have in it? If it says 4 you might fit 2 in it.

I have a wooden coop that cost about £125 from ebay. It has lasted a year and should last longer. I'm keeping it as a spare and have removed the run as it folds up. I keep getting comments on how nice it is which I find strange as I have a lovely eglu now. haha. The one I have was listed as being big enough for 4 chickens, but there was room for the speckledy to perch and the silkie snuggled next to her. The run is also too small. It's good as a hospital coop for 1 large chicken or broody coop or intro coop for 2 little silkie sized chickens.

Personally I wouldn't waste my money, well not twice anyway. They tend to be made from the lowest grade of wood and are flimsy and not at all durable. I'd be more inclined to keep a look out on ebay or the small ads in P P magazine for a second hand coop & run made by a reputable like Forsham, Flytes of Fancy, Steve Fisher, Feathers Animal Housing, Rivers etc etc. Or maybe someone local to you?

I think it depends on what you use it for. If you want it as a full-time accomadation, you'll be disappointed...for a "hospital wing"...used a few weeks a year and stored correctly between uses (somewhere dry with an even temperature) it could be ideal.

Problem with the 'big names' is they make big, heavy coops! Yes, they're brilliant quality and guaranteed....but I'm currently looking for something to raise two young birds in...so was looking at the same type of coop as scarlettohara! I don't want to spend £400 on an enormous coop and run that is only going to be used for 12 weeks or so!!

Yes that's true and I do see that, but those flimsy imported coops just won't stand being asssembled, dismantled, re-assembled etc etc. I was stupid enough to buy one (house only, without a run) a couple of years ago to use for temporary housing inside my aviary so I am speaking from experience. They are just not worth wasting your money on and I would never recommend that anyone does.

I think Scarlett has the best idea - she's obviously found something that suits her well, so keeping an eye out for a good value second hand one is imho a very good plan and not one she'll regret.

Problem for me is I have a small, odd shaped garden...I'd love another Eglu and an eglu by itself is fine but the run won't fit (well, the skirt doesn't) other than slap bang in the middle, which means we'd have to climb over it!! Plus, cheapest Eglu I've found is still over budget for just a couple of growers!!

Might have a look at building something.... :anxious::?:lol:
