amateurkeeper
Sounds like coccidiosis, maybe it would be a good idea to get some Coxoid. I've not used it myself but I believe it is a liquid you add to the water.
Guest
I just read this up and it is this because it can pass to puppies and our vet says my 17 week old french bulldog puppy has a mild case of this because he has diarrhoea so just ordered some treatment. Thank you. I don't want to lose her but I fear it is too late she is distant didn't even come say hello this morning Going to treat the whole flock and hopefully I would have caught it but don't want it to get to the 3 ducklings I have
Guest
Just spoke to mum and she rang our friend who said it is so I have to isolate the whole flock. Great means I have to make sure i wear different shoes from the hens to the ducks. And make sure the frenchie doesn't go in the chicken run. Hope I catch it in time. Lewis
Have you got the coxoid? If not need to get it asap. To make a smaller batch, its something like 6ml of coxoid per litre ... can't remember so just check the bottle. You'll need to put it in everyones water to treat them all - is she separated from the others in a different hutch etc? Wearing different shoes isn't too hard - try to limit contact with all of them, maybe keep the puppy in, or at least away from the chickens and ducks. Guest
Well rang my breeder and they both came and had a look at betty and it is coccidiosis
Lewis
Have you separated her yet? Saw on fb she was still with the others... Need to get the coxoid as soon as then. Hope she's ok...
Guest
She can't be separated. I have nowhere else. Yeah while I was talking to you and molly they were on they're way. Just going to have to see what happens.
coco
When Flora had Cocci she was in the same run as Fleur. It was only Flora that got it, the vet said its like us having a bug, some people will catch it some won't. As said give the Coxiod to all your hens. Make sure that Betty is getting enough fluid, syringe it into her if she is not drinking. The vet also suggested I give Flora baby food to get some nutrients into her as she wasn't eating. again give with a syringe. At least if she gets over it she will be immune to that particular stain. i would start treatment asap as catching it early seems to help. good luck with Betty. Christian
Do you have a box Rhys? Anything to keep her away from the others. She really needs to be kept warm and quiet and coxoid asap.
Guest
I am treating all hens the treatment should come this week. Just hope I have caught it all in time. Bob is making sure she eats and drinks. By moving to the drinker betty follows bob And bob took betty 2 big chunks of cucumber which she ate. Should I treat her like I did when she was broody and give her wet corn since she ate some corn this morning.
Christian
She needs to be kept separate from the others really Rhys. By leaving them all together, you are potentially increasing the risk of them all becoming infected.
Egluntyne
I agree, she needs to be kept apart from the others. Can you not borrow a cat carrier or similar and place it in the garage with her in it?
Chucky Mama
She can't be separated.I have nowhere else. with your ever growing flock it is important to give a quarantine area some thought. It may prevent serious outbreaks.
karlotta
Just as an aside the Chicken variety of Cocci cannot affect dogs and vice versa. If they both have it, it's just a coincidence. It's very serious in such a small puppy too so be sure to be extra vigilent with clearing and disinfecting the areas he poos in. You say you have ordered treatment for him? Does this mean he hasn't seen a vet? If a puppy has diarrhea he needs seeing NOW. Puppies dehydrate VERY fast.
Guest
We used to breed dogs. The puppy has been to a vet went 2 weeks ago and has been on pills since. We know what we are doing with that. Medicaiton for the hens. Anyway thanks guys but my breeder came and told me everything
Lewis
I am treating all hens the treatment should come this week.Just hope I have caught it all in time. So you're not treating them, yet... May have caught it in time but they need treating asap. As people have already said, you must have somewhere to separate her - a cat carrier, cardboard box, rabbit hutch. What do you take the dogs to the vets in? Wheres the brooder you had for the chicks? You're putting all the flock at risk by not separating them, and if the breeder said its cocci can you not go out and get medicine instead of waiting till the end of the week to get it delievered? Also, if she's had a dirty bum for a while + it keeps coming back, have they been wormed with flubenvet? Can't do both treatments at the same time, but sounds like that might need doing too. Plum
It's probably a bit late to protect the others she may have shed cocci already and no doubt they have been exposed to the source as well. I would make sure you treat them all and hopefully you will have a good outcome. Chickens pick up immunity from the environment they are in as chicks, exposure as they change locations or through vaccination and it may be your others have better immunity. There are several types of chicken cocci as well so they are probably immune to different strains. If the others start picking on her you will definately need to seperate and protect her even giving her a cardboard box to sleep in and a makeshift run as long as it's safe. Can't believe your breeder didn't give you any Coxoid they must keep it because with chicks it's vital to give it in hours not days.
