FiggyPudding
I've had 5 chickens - all rescue - & am now left with my final chicken - Lonely Lola. Her dear friend, Ex Batt, was taken by a fox last week & now she is so lonely, she is going into my next door neighbours garden & either sunbathing on the patio with her (yes really!) or else looking through the patio door & waiting for her ( I am on hols). My other neighbour is looking after her, but she works. My neighbour that she has befriended really isn't keen. Anyway, I am stuck about what to do - I've found hen keeping quite stressful - I hated seeing them locked in the eglu (too small) & bought them a walk-in run, which they also hated, perhaps because I spoilt them & so they had the run of the garden. 2 hens put to sleep, 1 taken by a fox & now Ex Batt taken by a fox last week so Lola is on her own. Would I be able to rehome her ? should i leave her to live a lonely but free range life in my back garden ? would she be happier in a walkin run environment with lots of friends ? I knew this moment would come, but am still unsure what to do for the best.....
Egluntyne
She'd be absolutely fine in the WIR with a couple of new friends, I'm sure. The Intro period inevitably will have a few scuffles, but once that is over, she will be much happier. Some tips on managing intros **here**. Mollie333
She'd do better with friends. Sorry for your loss, though.
Patricia W
If you really want to give up keeping chickens then re-home her. The worst option is to leave her alone- they are flock animals and really suffer alone. But I hope you get a couple more. Tricia
Roobaloo
If you still love hens, get her a companion...perhaps look to buying an older hen from someone else who is having to give up, rather than a point of lay. If your WIR is bigger than the Eglu run, then they'll definitely have enough room between them. My two girls get very upset when they're shut in the run....they shout, run their beaks along the mesh...but only when I'm there. I hang a cabbage, cauliflower or piece of broccoli up....scatter some layers pellets on the ground...and gave them some perches and when they can't see me, they immediately start scratching happily in the bedding, dust bathing and investigating the perches and hanging veg! Don't let it get to you, sometimes you need to be firm with them...otherwise they will rule the roost!!

Chicken keeping isn't for everyone and I wouldn't have the emotional resolve required to take on ex batts, so good on you for doing that Wonder if there's an Omleteer nearby who could offer a home? FiggyPudding
thanks for all advice. In the bottom of my heart, I want my hens to be free to wander around the garden. I've absolutely loved watching them walking in a line, side by side, incase they miss a titbit. And I've loved the way they walk round the garden with me, making their funny noises. But, I've fretted & stressed about Mr/s Fox & I've hated seeing them locked up. My hubby would like to move the walk-in run to the end of the garden, which is 160 ft away, keep more hens & keep them in there all the time. I'm not sure on this solution, so watch this space !! Someone has kindly offered to take Lola too & I know if she does go, she will be very well looked after & have lots of 'friends'. <>
Charlottechicken
Just a polite reminder that we can't allow rehoming via the forum. **Click**. Oops! Apologies for suggesting that Figgypudding, I like the sound of the bigger run set up, but you can still let the hens out to freerange when you are around. I love watching my girls wander around the garden and sunbathe on the grass.
