looking for homeless hens

Recommended Posts

hi guys,

me & hubby are looking to expand our brood, but we're looking for advice on where to find some hens.

we always planned on having some from the british wildlife rescue centre which is local to us in staffordshire, but currently they only have cockerels (and as much as i would love a cockeral i think our popularity with the neighbours would drop to zero ). they have our details so that if any hens are brought in to them they will contact us, but it's just a waiting game really and there are of course no guarantees, so now i'm looking into other options - of course if the situation arose where i'd already re-homed some hens and they contacted me i'd never turn away an orphaned hen GNR:( and we've got the space so there'd be no problem there. i just really really want some more! and patience isn't my stong point!

we currently have some ex-bat girls who are lovely and we wouldn't change for the world, and we know we will always have ex-bats until all hens finally get the freedom & respect we've all been praying for and there are no more caged hens in the world .

but i'd also really like to experience some other breeds, and for us personally we would prefer not to buy hens from a breeder - which is where the difficulty comes in :| (absolutely nothing to do with welfare issues or principles), just simply because we'd like to provide a loving family to some hens who aren't lucky enough to have one of their own, or for whatever reason have had to leave their current/previous family because of house moves, neighbour complaints, bullying, etc. i don't care how old they are, how many eggs they lay, or if they have a disability...i just care about them living out the rest of their days in a happy home.

there must be some hens i can help out there!...i just don't know where to find them! :(:wall:

please help me before my impatience gets the better of me and i end up driving down to the breed centre in devon and coming back with the 3 polands i've being dreaming of before i've even realised what i've done!:lol:

if anyone knows of any organisation or centre who takes in/rescues hens for re-homing, then please do let me know...as i know there must be some girls out there who need a wing to be taken under

thanks guys for the re-homing links, i will check these out.

rather than individuals re-homing i was really seeing if anyone knows of a rescue or organisation which takes in orphaned hens (like the british wildlife rescue centre i mentioned at amerton farm - who aren't advertised on the net as re-homing domestic birds, but will take in any orphaned bird and then re-home them if somebody with a good, suitable home asks).

i've hit a dead end with google searches, etc. :wall: but thought maybe there are other centres like theirs - who don't officially advertise as re-homing domestic birds but sometimes end up with ones in their care who they let go to suitable homes... :?:

maybe i'll start phoning around other wildlife/farm rescue centres to see if they have any chooks in need of a loving home  , but in the mean time if anyone thinks of anywhere that might fit the bill then please do let me know

thanks to all for your time & help

ps. just thinking  ....if a fellow omletter needed a new home for their hen or hens (not a breeder but rather an owner who can no longer keep their girls for whatever reason) then how would they go about doing this via the forum...would it be in the marketplace (where i've looked) or am i missing something?

My veternary practice gave me the name and telephone number of a farm which periodically "thins out" its free range flock when the chickens are about 18 months old, so I assume they are then sent for slaughter. I think the farm is required to do this by the supermarket that buys the eggs.

I acquired 2 Colombian Black Rocks who were excellent layers. Unfortunately, one became ill and died after 3 months but c'est la vie in the world of chickens!

Give your veternary practice a ring, they may be able to help or pm me if you live in the Cheshire/N Staffs area.

When I was re-homing my hens I advertised them on Preloved, there was a few adverts on there from people asking for hens, it might be the same in your area. I also put them on Freecycle Coffeehouse - the normal Freecycle in my area doesn't allow animals. There was a few other adverts for hens on this too, both wanted and offered.
