LuckyChickenLover-
Poor Lucky and Priscilla. It's been raining heavily for most of today, I expected the hens to go into the Eglu to shelter from the rain, or at least to stay under the shade, but when I went out right now my poor chooks looked like they had been for a swim! Should I lock them in the Eglu next time it starts raining? Thanks - LuckyChickenLover
chickyhazel
Some of ours go for shelter when it rains, but some of them get really bedraggled! We cover our entire runs with covers from omlet and shower curtains (you can get see-through ones which are brilliant and cheap) so ours only get wet free ranging. Unless you have a huge walk-in run this is a sensible option. Don't lock them in just the eglu all day as they will get bored and stressed. At best this will lead to minor pecking and a drop in egg production, at worst to cannibalism.
Mercedes55
I don't think it matters if they get wet this time of year as it's not really that cold. Mine have been quite funny today, they all came out of their run, realised it was raining and spent the rest of the day just standing inside their run looking out. They even went to bed early, so they obviously weren't enjoying the weather
chickyhazel
Ours occasionally give us a look as if to ask us why the sky is pouring water on them!
LuckyChickenLover-
Ours occasionally give us a look as if to ask us why the sky is pouring water on them! That's excactly what my girls did when I went out to see them. Thanks for your advice
Lavenders_Blue
If you can get something to cover the run such as a clear tarp/shower curtain then great. But if not, don't worry too much, they will dry off overnight and come out in the morning beautiful and fluffy!
Bexibex
Mine don't have much sense when it rains, they end up getting bedraggled too. Occasionally they do seek shade from the worst of it, but if they catch sight of one of us, they come legging it out back into the rain in case we have any food and then carry on freeranging in the downpour. I was concerned the other night as they went to bed wet but had dried off nicely by the morning.
jam
My pekin boys are a nightmare. I got home late last night, it was pouring it down and dark. They have a big playhouse to sleep in, but instead they were still sitting on the roof dripping wet!
daxigirl
Mine have a very fetching plastic shower curtain which has little ducks on it. Keeps most of the run good and dry and lets the girlies come out happy chooks
smackrell1
I was SOOO glad to read these posts and realise that my 2chooks are in fact perfectly normal in that they, too favour standing in the rain getting soggy rather than heading for cover! ) I'm not sure if I will ever truely understand chicken psychology!! )
