Chucky Mama
We were off down the motorway this afternoon to a memorial service of a friend. We stopped for fuel and OH pumped our diesel car full of £50 worth of PETROL Realised straight away thankfully before we drove it. The AA were pretty good and came out and drained the tank but with the petrol we lost and the cost of draining set us back nigh on £300 Didn't make the memorial either as the whole thing took 2 hours. Now we are evens as I have done it once in the same car too. We tried to look on the bright side and decided that for some reason we were just not meant to be on the motorway today. Egluntyne
Oh heck. Shame you missed the service, but as you say, it wasn't meant to be.
Willow
How annoying, bad enough when it isn't something specific you are trying to get to. I've never done it but my OH could never understand why I was adamant I didn't want us to have one diesel and one petrol car because I knew I would get mixed up one time. We used to have a Peugeot 306 that was very forgiving of us running it on low oil levels and when I gave it to my nephew he filled it with diesel instead of petrol (we'd abused the engine - see comments about oil so it probably sounded like a diesel )he drove it 50 miles or so before he realised I think he drained what he could and filled it with petrol and it kept going. LuckyChickenLover-
I've never misfueled a car but I can sympathise with having to pay £300 Shame you missed the memorial, too We're having the MOT done today and it's costing just under £1000. The car's only worth about £400!
Geoid
£1000! There must be a lot of things that need repairing for it to cost that much.
Chucky Mama
What are they doing? Gold plating it
LuckyChickenLover-
What are they doing? Gold plating it No, platinum Problems with the driver's seatbelt, brakes, one of the door locks need to be entirely replaced, there was something wrong with the washers, something wrong with the windscreen wipers... chickric
Never done it myself but we have had a diesel for a long time, saw these the other day. Quite annoying but a lot cheaper that £
The Dogmother
Our MD's missus does it on a regular basis That's a massive service bill - I'd get a second opinion if I were you
Lesley
Never done it myself but we have had a diesel for a long time, saw these the other day. Quite annoying but a lot cheaper that £300 I wonder if they do one for petrol - I've recently changed from diesel back to petrol (bring back the Mini One D!! - which I think they are in September).......I'm used to pulling up at the diesel pump.......it's only a matter of time
Chucky Mama
I did buy one of those alert things when I did it a few years ago but everyone turns around to look when you're at the petrol station and it drove me potty so I removed it. We used it on the inside of the freezer instead. It was great for telling us when the kids had left the freezer door open. OH know someone that misfuelled, had it drained and then went to fill up and filled up with the wrong fuel again

A friend had the same problem and now has a notice on her freezer stating that anyone leaving it open will be butchered and loaded into said freezer
debbier
I was told that it is far more damaging to car to put petrol in a diesel than the other way around.

Seagazer
We haven't done it (yet) as we used to have a petrol and diesel car. We only have diesel now and its got a sticker inside the flap saying diesel but I still have to double check the hose each time I fill it up. I have such a dread of getting it wrong. Sorry you missed your friend's memorial.
WarrensWorld
You're lucky you didn't race off along the Motorway. That would be a little more expensive in more ways than one. Didn't he realise that the green petrol pump nozzle, was a little smaller than diesel one....
chickenNutter
Oh yes, I've done it, and in my OH's car as well. Nearly led to divorce proceedings. Put Petrol in a diesel. Can't remember how much it cost as it was about 15 years ago, but it didn't do a lot for the car as I did try to drive it away. Even allowing for the advance of time, I don't think it was that much though. Glad to say we are still married!
PapaJuliet
I wonder if they do one for petrol - I've recently changed from diesel back to petrol (bring back the Mini One D!! - which I think they are in September).......I'm used to pulling up at the diesel pump.......it's only a matter of time I don't think it is physically possible to fit a diesel nozzle into a petrol tank... At least, that was what the AA man said when I managed to put petrol in my diesel car. There was one pump in the petrol station I used regularly which was the opposite way round to the others (diesel on the right instead of the left, or whatever) and I noticed as I was putting the nozzle back on to the pump. So, yes, I had to pay for the petrol, missed the dance practice I was trying to get to, waited for hours (felt like it) while the AA man rang round to find somebody to drain the tank, paid to get the tank drained then paid to fill up with diesel. Not a good evening. PJ Ah! thank you. When I say that I'm used to pulling up by pump......that is all I do. Petrol fumes give me migraines and so I generally just say I need petrol and Carl takes my car and fills it up

Chucky Mama
The very lovely AA man said that it is possible and he attends plenty of people that have done it. It is more difficult though as the nozzle is a more difficult fit.
Olly
Oh dear! A friend did this in her nearly-new BMW, and they were quoted over £1000 by the BMW garage She took it to her local garage that she's used for years, and they did it for £250. I've never done it ... yet. My car has a sticker on the filler cap reminding you that it needs diesel, but in an absent-minded moment I can see it would be easy to overlook it. Old Speckled Hen
I haven't done it but when I bought my first diesel car last year I did dream about misfuelling
