CallyChook
Well, two days ago the "chicks" now small birds, moved out into the shed having been in my lounge since hatching. It was a stressful day as there were the two "batches" mixing, but all seems calm - the two factions have just decided to keep to different areas! the folks meet and greet at the food bowl the polands stretch out the two larger blue silkies Rain and Monsoon stick together like glue Twingo, the first dominant male of the group. Twingo is so beautiful meet Ethel, bought yesterday to increase the female contingent Beaker leads the way for his new wife and the two new white miniature silkies, Mildred and Maud. the big folk next door dont seem to mind having had their area reduced in size a bit Guinevere still holds first place in my heart as my first ever hen xx

CallyChook
lovely to see some laced polands Tell me how your croad is getting on - what's he like (good and bad please)? He's fab, settled in very well. My only concerns are that he is a bit of a bully with one of the hens... he wont tread her but instead runs her off from the food when he is watching. Also he doesnt do the "tuck tuck" noise when he finds a tasty treat and leave it for his ladies, he's very selfish with treats ans scoffs them all. I'm hoping this is just because he is still young, he still doesn't have a full compliment of tail feathers, and maybe in a couple of months time he'll mature into that kind of behaviour. His crow is very wonky too - instead of cocka doodle doo it's more of a cocka - woohhhh. maybe again this is due to age and will mature?? Looks wise he is still a stunner and also is fine with aggression - he lets my 3 yr old race round the garden and hasnt shown an inkling of the clawing/jumping attack behaviour that my 9 week old poland is loving at the moment! He pathers round my legs within a 2 foot distance while I'm hanging out the washing and seems to enjoy human company. He pecked nastily at my hubby when hubby was helping me to grab the ladies out of the coop one by one for mit eand lice checks on evening, but I see this as a bonus - he was making sure his flock were not being molested! OH didn't much appreciate the lovely purple bruise that came up tho!
Griffin
New girl Ethel is super cute! So nice to see a lot of Polands together. My two Polands, Doris and Olive, are such good friends and always hang around together away from the rest of the gang so I thought it'd be nice for them to have another Poland friend or two. I hatched out three, two silver laced and a cuckoo. The cuckoo is a girl and we've named her Dilys. No idea what the silver laced are yet but can't wait to see Doris & Olive being part of a larger flock of Polands. Polands are purely for my amusement, Doris lays about one egg a week and Olive has never bothered!
Daphne
Thanks for that CC - I think he looks magnificent and I'm half planning a future flock but I want to know as much as possible about male behaviour first. Take a listen to his chest regarding his crowing - just make sure there is no wheezing going on as this can curtail the crow. Griffin - fingers crossed for next year perhaps or that your new girl shows them the way!
CallyChook
For me the eggs are a total bonus, I'd be happy to keep polands without ever getting an egg from them they're just soooo adorable! I'm quite a tomboyish character and not normally into fluffy or fancy things, but this poland obsession is threatening to take over. Last night I told OH about my plans for next yr - to hatch out some of the eggs from this flock and hope for some quirky poland silkie crosses..... he palely walked out of the room to grab a beer!! Blue silkie x silver lace poland... wonder what that'd come out like??? Gold laced poland x white miniature silkie anyone? *swoon*!! Daphne, if I had more space, I'd love a pure black croad flock. The way their feathers shine in the sun is stunningly beautiful and their size is just so impressive. I have told all my friends that if I win more than 50k on the lotto, I'm buying a small parcel of land and breeding poultry from then on.
