Handy Cube Run Roosting Bars - PICS!!!

Recommended Posts

Just thought we'd share this solution we have found for our cube run.

We have a cube run + 2 extensions and for some while have used some wood we had as roosting bars. However, we wanted something a little more user friendy from our point of view and comfy for the chickens (what suckers!). We weren't keen on branches and hadn't found the right size/shape for what we wanted.

We have discovered what is for us the perfect solution. We now have 3 tree stakes which we have cut to about 3-4" longer than the gap between the sides of the run when they are positioned diagonally. They are about 2" diameter and round. We sanded them down to take the rough bits off and mitred the ends so they could be fitted in diagonally. To fix them through the bars we cut a section out (also diagonally) above & below, leaving a section in the middle of the end that goes between the horizontal bars of the run. The stakes only stick out a little more than an inch each side through the bars & can be moved out of the way when wanting to walk inside the run or to clean them. They are perfectly secure as they are wedged in place (bit like a budgie roosting bar!).

The chooks love them & we have set them up so they can zig-zag upwards as they hop from one to the other along the run. We caught 3 of them sitting together the other day on one bar. Cute!!

What a great idea. I'll be borrowing it to make perches in our WIR.

Glad it's of help. What's really useful is that you can stand inside & pop the ends of the bars out of the weldmesh, lay them on the floor & move further in. When we had wooden bars they stuck out quite a bit so they wouldn't slip out of the weldmesh when the hens used them. It made it awkward when we went to full cover the run in the wet weather as the ends would rub the tarps. No problem now & we don't have to thread them out from the outside for cleaning :)
