Cate in NZ

New Zealand- a bit of a jumbled post!!

Recommended Posts

Sounds like a very sensible decision Kate - I can see the sense postponing your complete family relocation until after GCSEs etc. Plus, as others have said it gives hubby a chance to be sure the job suits him before you all up sticks.

I lived apart from my boyfriend (now my hubby) for 3 years between '93 and '96 when I did my law degree and would stress the need to keep in regular contact - that should be evn easier for you than it was for me now that everyone can have broadband and webcams etc. Be sure to make a real effort to do this and then, if all is well with the job, move out with your children as soon as their education allows. Although you get through a year or two apart a family should be together in the long term - so my advice is not to let the years keep drifting

Well done for such a sensible and brave decision - I'm sure I speak for many in saying I don't envy the choice you've had to make.

Thanks for the supportive comments all :D I knew this was coming but still it's been a tough couple of days. Lots of pros and cons, even more don't knows, but if we don't give it a go we'll never know. Fingers very tightly crossed that this is the right decision, but then again if it doesn't work out we can always come back........... it's only the other side of the world after all :lol::lol::lol:

Good for you Kate - as they say "better to regret the things you've done, than the things you've not done" It's not an irreversible decision - you can always come back even if it is the other side of the world!! And don't forget geography is nothing on the omlet forum

I agree. You might as well try it as you've been given the chance. You can always change your mind. And of course, they have penguins in NZ. And you won't get time to miss your family and friends as they will all be wanting to come for a holiday with cheap accommodation. (when are the British Lions touring there again? )

PS We must get around to organising that Leeds Castle get together.

Sorry, just refreshed this thread with a bit of an update. We rceived an email yesterday suggesting a posting in Rotorua, NZ starting 25th Feb 08, so I've put out a query on another forum that I frequent asking for details about Rotorua, nice places to live, good schools and so on. If I get some positive responses we can respond with a yes and a formal cntract will be issued. Not sure what happens if we decline Rotorua though :?

We've had the immigration medicals,(well, all except Immi, we did them during half term to prevent having to take the children out of school, but she was on an Air Cadet trip, so she stills needs to go), no concerns there . Apart from the fact that I didn't drink a drop of alcohol for a month before my blood tests knowing that I had to have Liver Function Tests and if the results came back raised I'd have to have further tests. Instead my LFTs came back LOW  It's OK, not a problem, but I obviously need the occasional glass of wine to keep my liver ticking over normally

Just waiting for the Police certs & Immi's medical and then we can submit our formal Immigration Application to NZ house along with the formal job offer/ contract.

Family all know, and are supportive of us, although one of my sisters took it badly to begin with.

This evening we're off to a BBQ with some old friends who we've not seen for a while, so expect to be breaking the news to them.

Hubby's planning his leaving party

It's all coming together :D .

Feeling very guilty though, Immi's just submitted her GCSE choices and is excited about her options. She's also so into her Air Cadets stuff that she's now planning a career with the RAF. She'll no doubt change her mind a dozen times when it comes to a future career, but I feel so bad encouraging her to start these things but knowing that she can't complete them :( . She will get an education in NZ, with formal leaving exams (NCEAs  ), and she could always apply to NZAF, or come back for the RAF, and she wants to go to NZ, but still, it's a big step into the unknown :?:eh::eh:

You've spent so long thinking about all of this Kate, and you know you will all make the right decision in the end. It must be very daunting though :?

We seriously considered moving to France - and that was going to be tough for us.

Good Luck!

How have I missed this  What a fantastic opportunity Kate A. Am very, very  Of course you will be taking us all with you (I mean the forum and not physically  ).

OH has wanted to move to Italy for some time now but initially I said no for completely the wrong reasons and it was something Cinnamon/Sarah said once in a post about moving to France that finally made me realise that life is so short and that you need to grab these sort of opportunities with both hands. Thank you Sarah

OH and I are off to Italy next weekend to look at houses (without the children  ).

Do keep us informed of how it is going :D

My sister and her family went to live in Australia 3 years ago, with mixed feelings and clinging to the thought that they could come back if it wasn't for them.

They have just been back for a visit and have said it was most definitely the right move for them, and are unlikely to come back.

The lifestyle, opportunities for the children and the excellent education system are much better over there.....and of course there is the weather.

Rotorua, I thought was a lovely town - and with all those volcanic places to visit.

We had a great tour around for a week or so - lovely lakes and countryside out of the town.

The smell took me a bit of getting used too - like rotten eggs - but the beauty far outweighed that.

Fantastic hot springs there - spent a magical night in pitch darkness in a hot spring chatting and looking at the stars in a Lake in the middle of nowhere - owned and run by the Maoris - out of this world!

If you are not into bowling - you very soon will be - it is famous for its historic and wonderful bowling greens - and they serve great meals in the historic clubhouse too!

(And cheap 'liver medication' too of course)
