Currant
Hi- one of my chickens who is about 22 weeks and not yet laying has one bubbly looking eye that she is finding difficult to see out of. She seems otherwise well apart from a bit of sneezing now and again. I have put poultry spice in the pellets and life guard in the water to supplement her but is there anything else I should do such as bathe the eye? She is really difficult to catch to get a good look! on order
Space Chick
It sounds like she could have a respiratory infection. I would bathe the eye with a cotton woll ball with cold (black)tea. You could also try adding citrocidal to the water as this is could for minor colds. However, if shes not better in a few days, or appears off her food, then I would take her to the vets. Egluntyne
I'd be thinking mycoplasma with the bubbly discharge from her eye. Might be worth speaking to the vet.
scarlettohara
One of my pekins had a sore and swollen eye over the last week, not bubbly but kept her eye closed most of the time. After 2 different types of antibiotics my vet diagnosed mycoplasma - she has now made a complete recovery
Currant
I have now bathed the eye in cold tea and noticed a nostril was bubbly too. I don't have citricidal so I have ordered some but gave her nutri drops instead. Would Mycoplasma make her unwell and off her food? She seems fine otherwise. Is it just a cold and how can you tell the difference? Thanks for all your help - she is such a lovely chicken, amber coloured fenton blue with a cute tuft and bottom of the pecking order! MedusA
With my girls, I always think that if there are any doubts at all, a vet visit is worth the price, for the peace of mind. Even if it doesn't turn out to be Mycoplasma, just a cold, you've done the best by her. Better that rather than risk losing a much loved chicken. Muggle has had 3 visits to the vet recently and it was worth every penny to know I was doing all I could for her. Hope your chook gets better soon. *hugs*
scarlettohara
Mycoplasma affects the sinuses so does sound as if your chicken could have it - better to take her to the vet
Currant
Hi-thanks for all your advice - I did take her to the vets yesterday (great excitement to see a chicken in the surgery!) as she seems a bit hunched and she does have a respiratory infection (infectious bronchitus i think) and has got some anti biotics for 5 days. It's not mycoplasma though so that's good. She said that even though they may have been vaccinated as chicks some do not get the full dose as it's sprayed over them. She also gave me enough Septrin (mm banana) in case the other 3 show any symtoms. Glad I went now as it does stop you worrying and the vet said we caught it early. Currant
Really? Oh that's good to hear. One of my old chickens Jazzy died on Monday but she wasn't showing any of the same symptoms as Charlotte so I think it was just old age - she has been doddery for a while then she didn't want to get off the nest in the morning so I gave her some nutri drops and anti-biotics but she had gone by the afternoon. Charlotte's eye is closed all the time and still looks snotty and very swollen so I am continuing past the 5 days as suggested by the vet to see if she improves. Brenda (same age 22 weeks from same place) was sneezing too today so might be coming down with it - arghh! To top it all the top chicken Chucky is being a real bully and won't let the others near the food. What a bad week...
Daphne
I think you need to treat Brenda too - IB is obviously infectious - but take advice from the vet; hopefully they can do you a phone consultation.
