Daffodil died yesterday - she went down hill very quickly. She was one of the 2nd lot of ex batts that we rescued and on a positive note had 11 months of freedom. However, Daffodil is the 4th our of girls to die since July, Three (Daffodil, Lily & Daisy) of them have been ex batts (free for 18 & 19 months) and 1 of our original (Betty).

 

Lily had a prolapse and died pretty much immediately, Betty also had a prolapse, however seemed to get over it and lived another 7 - 8 weeks, Daisy died in her sleep and from what I've googled about Daffodil's symptoms, could possibly be Botulism, though don't really know how as they had been confined to quarters as are being wormed this week.

 

I know that ex batts have had a hard life and all four are similar in age just 3 or coming up to 3, but to loose them in a short space of time is worrying.

 

They are just coming to the end of their worming regime (today is day 6/7).

may i just say that we have recently rescued our first lot of ex-bats, and for your 3 girls to have lived on for between 11 & 19 months is an amazing achievement. you should feel very proud of the freedom that you gave them and in their last few moments i'm sure they only had happy memories of their life with you

 

i honestly wouldn't spend anytime worrying about the closeness of their passings. 3 years of age is a very long & impressive life for a battery hen, so they would have all been preparing to exchange their chicken wings for angel ones.

it's also been a terrible summer this year and it's possible that the cold, wet & windy weather became too much for their fighting little bodies and contributed to them passing at similar times.

 

try to focus on the good times you had with them & always smile and feel proud when you think of the little hens whose lives you saved x

I'm so very sorry to hear about your girls, I can only imagine how hard it must be. We also have 4 ex batts, not sure exactly how old they are but we've had them since the beginning of July. It's been a joy to see them having a normal life and enjoying all the things they never had in the farms, and I am sure your girls felt the same. I dread anything happening to mine as it's amazing how quickly we bond with them.

Yes, I'll echo that. Daffodil and the other ladies had a wonderful retirement and that is all you could hope to give them. It's sad they have all gone at a similar time though
