Patience is a virtue.....

A guy came over yesterday and quoted for 2 raised beds. As there is a licac tree stump in the middle of where I want a bed, that would have to be taken out. He quoted £20 per hour per man. Two man job, Two days. That £320 per day, PLUS materials. He is barking mad if he thinks I'm paying that.

So OH and I went to Wickes and bought the wood and we made a 12' by 2' bed in about an hour last night! Just need to make 2 x 6' by 2" beds today. My very kind neighbour Rob (with super human strength) said he would dig out the stump to save my back! :D:D:D

I am like a new person all smiley and happy now! :D:D:D:D

That's excellent news Christian :D It won't take long and you'll be set-up for the weekend :D

and, you'll have learnt a new skill 8) There will be no stopping you now

Good grief! How much have you saved by making them yourself!!:lol:

You'll be able to pay Rob back with eggs and fresh veg all summer....so every one wins (except the dodgy quote guy!)

Christian....you don't fancy a wee jaunt up to the Borders to do some beds for me, do you? I've a hill for a back garden, and the plan is to terrace it with raised beds, but I simply cannot be bothered now, and I have tomatoes, cucumber, peppers and corn waiting patiently in the porch to be planted out!

Funny you should say that Chookie. We are driving up to Ayr to visit OHs Mum on Sunday. *mental note to leave hammer at home*

I just have to dig over the beds and then lay 20m2 of weed suppressing membrane, then cover it in tons of bark, then i'm done!

Ps Lesley the carrot seeds you sent are doing well! :D

Christian  that's brilliant. Can we see some photo's? I need some raised beds (perhaps a detour on the way back too?!?!), but we haven't got two brass pennies to rub together here and I haven't got a clue how to make them.

Chickpea has some fab ones too, and is just getting going with her beds.

You need to start a blob Christian, so we can see all your progress.

I bet you're glad that opther guy didn't turn up now. More money to spend on yourselves.

Glad to hear the seeds are doing well Christian. I've just planted your bean seeds - no signs of growth yet though.

We need to lay the weed suppressing membrane and then empty all the bags of bark which are stacked up, as well.

I don't envy you Shona - terracing is a nightmare job :? I'd invest in some large pots for this year's veggie. garden

You know what Lesley - that sounds like the voice of experience! I may well get pots then, and leave the garden as it is this year, for the children to perfect their mountaineering skills!

My 'blob' is here

Gina, how did you know i struggle with weight gain???????:lol:

All the wood, plus wooden stakes and weed membrane came to £45! Bargain!

Lesley I planted the beans weeks ago in root trainers, but only 4 out of 12 survived, so I have planted the rest out from seed in one of the original beds.

Are you on the east coast Shona?

I will post pics when i'm all finished!

 Lesley

What's the weed membrane called (is that a daft question?!)

Does it still let moisture through or will it clog up and start to go mouldy?

My little veggie patch is covered in weeds (not planted anything yet) and as quickly as I pull them up, they come back again. I can't keep up with it.

Will have a read of the 'Blob' when Stefan goes for his morning kip, Christian.

All sounds great Christian! It's great feeling you've saved a bit of money doing it all yourself! Just what I did, I thought 'blow that for a barrel of laughs' and went down to the wood mill, and bob's your uncle done and dusted. (though I'm still filling them up with top soil, nearly done though!)

You can see them here: http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=12185

Thanks Gina!

So far i have laid nearly 50m2 of weed suppressing membrane and stapled all the edges to the gravel board of the fence  1,257 staples so far! No, I haven't counted them really

Desperately trying to get hold of several bags of bark chippings, but my Mini boot doesn't have the room for them :lol:

had a physio appointment yesterday and on the way home, bought 6 bags of compost and 4 bags of top soil. Mortimer the Mini did well!!!

Will post pics soon!
