Sour crop

Recommended Posts

Any advice? After 3 years of chciken keeping my Buff Orp has sour crop - she looked a bit off the last couple of days, but when I examined her today she had all the symptoms - we have done the upside down, massaging the crop and got a lot of fluid out of her, I have isolated her and she has water with vinegar & avipro, plus wet pellets made from the same medicated water.

Hi there

I noticed that my Doris had Sour Crop when I let them out on Friday morning. Very hunched over, large squishy crop and very quiet. I tipped her gently forward, and a whole lot of revolting, brown liquid came out. I only did it for a few seconds, let her rest and then did it again. But it was all too much for her. I think she fainted! She went all limp in my lap and I thought she had died!!

However, I lifted her head a little and she came round. I put her back in her cage and left her quietly. I had to go out and was convinced she would be dead when I got back later that evening! But no! She was back to being a normal Doris chicken!! :D Fiesty, greedy and stronger than the other two - I was so delighted!

I have been giving her probiotic yoghurt with a crushed garlic in it - which seems to be staving it off. No treats for the moment apart from that and some bokashi bran.

I hope your chook is starting to feel better, but definately use the yoghurt and garlic - I believe it is an anti fungal treatment which can help sour crop.

Good luck! :)

OH thinks it looks as though I am playing the bagpipes with poor chicken upside down with me massaging her crop! The liquid didn't look as bad a colour today, but I haven't seen her eat and the only drinking seems to be when I am putting it down her. Given this (knowing how fast chickens can go down hill) we went to the vets today and she is on an 8 day anti-fungal course - so she has had this and more water (with avipro) to drink tonight, so will see what she is like come morning.

Still semptying horrid liquid, but colour and smell improving by the day and she has been out and about with the others and not so sleepy today, so I am hoping the anti-fungal medicine is doing its job - I also syringed yoghurt down her tonight when I got home from work, but I still haven't seen her eat or drink on her own, but she is looking a lot more perky - fingers crossed.

What with her, working fulltime and 7 chicks about to hatch in the next 24 hours it is busy, busy here!

Have had a lot of problems with sour crop recently - get bottle of Vanodine - seperate the girl from the others and give them all a 5 day course - 4ml per 6 litres.

This was the advise that I was given by a poultry expert

The correct treatment for Sour Crop is to massage the crop until empty, then keep her in a cage without food while giving her water containing Vanodine. If the crop doesn't fill up again after two days this will mean that the fungal infection at the base of the crop has been killed off. Keep her on the Vanodine water for a totsal of 5 days but give her a little corn on the 3rd day. If this successfully passes through the system then you can put her back on a normal diet, returning her to the others after the 5 day period.

It would be a good idea to give your flock a 5 day treatment with the inclusion of Vanodine in the water.

The fungal infection can be picked up from wild birds but the more common source is stale feed or feed which has had a little water on (rainwater) and dried out. This is one of the many reasons that all poultry in the old days were fed inside and not outside the house.

I know this is an old post, but one of my girls has just been on antibiotics for a chest infection, which then led to sour crop  . I have had her on vanodine in the water, and just started her on her first food in days........some maggots :lol: , and fingers crossed, she seems to be pulling through now.
