JanTheDiver
I have a cube with a 3m run and the girls have a big playpen around it in the garden for FR when I am home. They have had this for about a year and have obviously eaten all the grass by now so are just on the soil. I have heard that you should lime the floor that they live & poo on but what I don't know is this: How much lime? How often? What time of year? Can the girls be on the lime? Will it hurt them if they peck it? I wouldn't have thought so but I thought I should ask the question Is there anything else that is better to use to kill the nasties in the soil? I can't move the cube or run around as they have 80% of my garden already Any thoughts/advice would be welcome. Thanks Jan
Egluntyne
You need garden lime, not builders. I just scatter handfuls around, both in the run when I clean it out, and in their ranging area. Pongs vanish as if by magic. It won't harm the hens if theyingest it as it is only calcium carbonate, but it wouldn't be good for them to breathe in clouds of it, so usi e it fairly sparingly, and not on a windy day. I suppose I use it every couple of months, or more if things are a bit whiffy.

beach chick
I've actually found it really hard to get hold of round here! garden centres just seem to shake their heads and say "computer says no" or "there's no call for it". just got some stalosan which I hope will do the job inside the WIR at least. Treekeeper
Go to a country store such as WCF rather than a garden centre big bags are much cheaper!!
sjp
try B&Q or a smaller garden centre/nursery
