Bladder cancer in dogs question. UPDATE

Recommended Posts

hi

I was wondering if anyone has had a dog with this ?

jessie my 12 year old lakeland had a scan and x ray - no stones but a thickening of bladder walls

vet said was very likely a tumor but would need to op to be sure

I don't want to put jessie through op at her age as I think it would not have a good outcome

Bladder tumours can only really safely be diagnosed via surgery. Biopsies are not a good idea in bladder tumours as malignant cells can be transferred to surrounding cells via the needle insertion and subsequent removal. There is a safe way of taking a biopsy which is a cystoscopy (biopsy taken using a scope) but you would need a referral to a specialist for that. The outlook if it is indeed a tumour (which it may not be) depends on the location. If there is no involvement of the ureters the tumour may well be able to be simply cut out. Regarding your dogs age. It really depends how fit a 12 year old she is. Most vets do routine blood tests to ensure good health before surgery. The is always a risk with an anaesthetic but if she is healthy apart from the bladder issues, there is no reason why she shouldn't do very well :)

hi

she is winding down ,has been for the last few months.she sleeps most of the day now ,does not want to eat much

she is happy in herself and i don't want to risk her not recovering from the surgery ( i lost a dog throught bladder stone surgery who was only 6 and very healthy so I don't want to put my old lady through it)

vet gave us some antibotics fot the next month for her

she is much brighter this week the tablets are working and she is more comfortable, still having accidents in house but I can cope with this even to have a few more weeks with her.

she is eating more and looking more interest in food, every bodys ,she barked at my 2nd youngest for bit of his chips last night
