Lice Lice and Lice

Recommended Posts

Only had my girls 3 weeks and knew something was wrong. Checked Julie (baby buff orpington only 15 weeks) and she's full of creepy crawlies....the dreaded Lice. Been to various agricultural supplies today and eventually the Vets to get hold of ivermectin! Vet confirmed lice and prescribed ivermectin thank goodness!. 4 drops on back of neck every 2 weeks for all the girls. Vet quite young and although very helpful wondered if ok to leave for 2 weeks before reapplication. Julie is really bad, huge clumps of eggs at base of her feathers. Will these clear up or do I need to remove them?

Hi there. Poor little girls. They must be uncomfy. From what I can gather the reapplication of invermectin is needed to break the life cycle of the lice and kill the lice that have by then hatched out. I'm pretty sure that our vet said to reapply after 2 weeks also when we had invermectin last winter. The good think is that at least it'll kill off any external and internal nasties. I'm sorry I can't be any help with the clumps of eggs - hopefully someone will be along soon to help with that. If not some info will come up under an internet search. Good luck x

They will remain, as they are cemented to the feathers, and no amount of washing will shift them. I would trim the feathers with some blunt ended scissors if they are bothering her (or you). :D

Was it 'frontline' he gave you ?

If not it does work, but not licensed for poultry yet. The cat stuff is more gentle than the dog type.

I know peeps who use it and haven't looked back. 2 drops for larger breeds, 1 for bantys for e.g.

Hello my friend has just used frontline as was fed up with the powders not working for her how often do you reply it as l was reading it was every 3 months.Could you advice me :)
